Well I've had my Note 2 for a couple of months now and really love the hardware side of it. Android not so much, although there are things about Android that I'm wildly excited about it seems that there is more stuff that I'm kind of disappointed in, simple difficulties which shouldn't exist.

Now my issues may with the Samsung touchwiz, I really don't know as my only experience with vanilla android was a 2 week stint with a nexus 7. I'm curious if I'm doing anything wrong, or if anyone has any solutions to what are really just annoying foibles which make.

My main issues are with the navigation and with google now. Navigation is kind of meh, the biggest issue is it isn't great at guidance. For example forks in highways, New Jersey is probably the king of overlapping and very confusing highways. My iphone at first was kind of bad at guidance, but VERYquickly it became rock solid, and I enjoyed mostly that at those weird highway junctions where you might have 3 or 4 forks in the highway the iphone seemed to be flawless at telling me which lane to stay in, etc. With google it really stinks at this, it won't even tell me to stay in a particular lane or on one side or the other, not know which highway I have to eventually end up on I have to scroll to the next direction screen, taking my eyes off the screen while meanwhile a hummer is 3 inches from my back bumper and the guy in the Honda civic with the fart can is trying to cut me off, you see my issue. I've had other issues as well, but overall it just seems when I really need the navi to kick in it's not very effective.

As for Google Now, it's terrible IMO. The way it shoves a google search down your throat is insanely bad. I can say "call Mario" and 90% of the time I get a google search for Nintendo Mario, maybe 1/10 times it will actually pull up my contact, but right under it is, you guessed it, a google search for Super Mario. I can say "call Joe Smith" and it literally searches "call Joe Smith" on google. Saying navigate to x location is a little better, but is also wonky at times. I miss iOS where Siri would just dial the number directly, or go right to navigation.

Navigation is also wonky when I'm on a call. With iOS when in navigation if I get a call the navigation gets muted, but still continues to silently navigate. With Android the navigation keeps blaring out of the phone speaker, or if I'm on a Bluetooth call it continues to speak in the Bluetooth speaker speaking right over the persons voice who I'm on a call with, that's terrible. It should know enough to mute itself while I'm on a call, I've had some embarrassing moments when having meetings in my car when suddenly the navigation starts blaring out commands.

Before I forget, don't get me started on group messaging. It doesn't work with the stock messaging app, from what I understand Google fixed this in 4.2.2, but I will have to wait 50 or 60 years to get Samsung to maybe release 4.2.2, and I don't plan on rooting and don't see why I should have to. I have tried both GoSMS and Handcent, I really really like Handcent, but it still doesn't get group messaging right at all, it lets me receive group messages so far, but when I reply it doesn't go back to the entire group. I have activated the group messaging settings in Handcent and goSMS.

Well enough of my aimless rambling, but I was just curious if anyone else experienced these annoyances and missed the areas iOS was rock solid in. And if part of this is user error I'd love to have someone tell me how to improve them.

PS. Overall I'm liking Android better overall and find myself doing some very cool things which help my work flow quite a bit. But there is just some obvious stuff that makes you wonder whos feedback Google is listening to when tweaking their OS.

google now is supposed to be google search for most of the stuff, you have to use s voice to make calls and stuff.

Im pretty sure I read online that you should have group mess in 4.2.1 and I think the note 2 is on that os right now

When your on Google Now, tap the menu button, then tap settings, then tap phone search. Now are you sure that the Contacts is checked off? From what your describing, it's doesn't sound like it is.

Google Now has been accurate about 95% of the time when I ask to call a contact name.

There are some minor things I like with the TW UI, but honestly you would enjoy your phone a whole lot more if you were to root it. It isn't hard and there are nice step by step instructions and video on the XDA forums: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1870#tutorial

Once rooted, any and all features and updates to Android are yours to download whenever you want and you can make Nandroid backups (a complete snapshot of everything on your phone) or back up individual apps and system apps.

Personally, I find ROMs that have a stock flavor with cherry picks of the latest and greatest to be the best mix. And the Int'l ROM for the Note2 is better than the crappy US carrier versions IMO.

I'm with ya man. I love my Nexus 4, but there are things I miss about iOS that just work better.

1. Siri. Google Now is not in the same league as Siri. You are required to use the touch screen to enable Google Now. When texting someone, you are required to press send message. When you are calling someone and can't look at your phone, you have no idea if it pulled up the right person because it never tells you. The conversational side of Siri makes it a fantastic hands free feature. Google now is more, "Hey I can show you some random information you may or may not like if you ever decide to click on me."

2. App quality. Some people say this is a BS argument nowadays. But its not. Slice on my iPhone 4S (half the cores, half the clock speed, 1/4 the RAM) runs so much smoother than Slice on my Nexus 4. Same thing for Plex, Amazon, Evernote, Feedly, FaceBook, and so many more.

3. Email. My biggest annoyance is that no email client (besides one very specific email client that only supports having 1 account type) supports proper pinch to zoom. You can spread your fingers to zoom in all your want. But if you want to pinch to zoom out on any email with an image in it, the email client just won't be able to zoom all the way out. And this problem is on all 3 major email clients: K9, Aqua Mail, and the stock email app on 4.2.

I'm seriously mystified by the fact the stock mail app behaves like that. Hopefully the stock email client will get some love in KLP.

Seems to have been pretty much neglected over the years.

I would highly suggest you flash to a pure Android 4.2.2 ROM.

Unless there are specific features you use only in TouchWiz... you'll wonder why you used TouchWiz this whole time.

Yep, contacts are checked off.

I'm very tempted. The only thing holding me back was Multi view, but honestly its Kind of useless. I'm also not looking forward to setting everything up again, as I had everything set up perfectly.

Google Now is scarily good. Far more accurate than Siri on my iPad.

Voice recognition is much better on Google, but actual functionality is much worse.

That's true but lets face it the Voice recognition is the hard part to get right, to setup the functionality should be fairly easy for google to do if they choose. I much prefer Google now as it understands EXACTLY what i say, i cant say the same for Siri.

To the OP, i also suggest you flash a AOSP/AOKP based rom, unless there are features that you really need TouchWiz just slows the phone down and ruins the pure android experience. So many people that are used to IOS try a Samsung Android phone and hate it then go back to an iPhone and say how much they hate Android when they don't even know what "pure" android is like.

I much prefer siri overall as most times using google now the results are just nonsense or its a google internet search shoved down your throat. Siri seems to understand what you are trying to accomplish, where google seems to just want to plug your query into its search engine.

I use Google Now for almost all my calling to contacts. Rarely does it have an issue for me. I have a Mario in my contacts and don't have the issue of it searching for Mario Bros. When it goes to call, I can either press the call icon or wait 3-4 sec for it to automatically dial. I don't consider waiting for that long an issue but I'm also okay for waiting for food to cook in an oven than a microwave.

I've had to use navigation quite a bit this weekend since I was out of town with my high school soccer team at a tournament. The were a lot of forks in the roads in this town and along the way. Navigation was pretty flawless at identifying to stay in a certain lane or to take a certain direction at the fork or one of those awesome lefts and then an immediate right. And it gave a heads up well in advance.

No you dont. I have S Voice disabled. Google Now works just fine calling people from my contacts...but then i have no Marios in my contacts ;)

I only have 4.1.1 on my GS3 but i use Hancent SMS and got the free plugin for group messages. Works fine.

Maybe it is your acccent ;)...lol, seriously, GN is very accurate for me.

It is funny though, some people will say Siri works great for them while others say it is a disaster. Its rare really that you see someone having issues with GN.

TitaniumBackup... literally will back up everything for you and once you flash it just run it again and it will reinstall/restore everything you want it.

It would be nice if you could turn off the google internet search selectively, for example turning it off if you request "call" or "navigate".

Yeah, but I have to root first, that's where I will lose all my settings. I just have to bite the bullet.

Does anyone know of a good ROM to recommend for 4.2.2 on an ATT note 2?

I'm not using 4.2.2. I'm using the international version of CleanROM. It's essentially the stock international version ROM for the Note 2. So stock out of the box with no at&t bloat.

If you are having trouble with Siri voice recognition, you can correct it by tapping on the speech bubble. This brings up the keyboard so you can correct the parts Siri got wrong. I think in the long run, doing that would improve Siri's voice recognition, although I don't use it enough to see any noticeable effects.

Everytime I try and use Carbon to backup to one of my cloud services, I ALWAYS get an error. And I paid for the full version too and have reinstalled multiple times. Titanium Backup is still the best and most reliable.

Oh, I prefer TB as well but made the suggestion as the OP was concerned with the reset associated with unlocking/rooting.

Such as what? I don't understand what you are asking. Also IMO there is a lot of lag in Android, at least on my Note 2. Its especially notable in things like waking up from sleep, or having the screen turn on when taking it away from your ear, or switching tabs in the phone app, I've noticed these things take sometimes 1 to 3 seconds to happen where it was always instant with iOS..

----------

Try Carbon backup, doesn't require root.

Thanks I'll give it a try.
