I've just run into my first major headache with Windows 7, I had to print so I downloaded the Windows 7 print drivers for my Canon MX 860. It just won't install in Boot Camp.

In fact the whole printing subsystem is broken in Boot Camp. Even thought the Print Spooler service says it's working, I get a message that it is not running when I try to add a printer, any printer, and the XPS printer is missing in action.

What's odd is that it is fine under VMWare. I installed the printer driver and tested it, but it is completely MIA in Boot Camp.

EDIT: I've had enough. The troubleshooter just tells me to reboot, reboot, reboot, no change. I tried removing all the registry keys I could find that had anything to do with the printer I was trying to install. No dice.

Time to do an in place upgrade/repair install, and hope it doesn't mess something else up in the process.

Did you install the 64-bit version of the driver? Was the driver signed by Canon or some vendor? Is the driver designed for Vista, 7, or XP 64-bit?

Windows Vista/7 64-bit require signed drivers. If the drivers were not signed, then you should have received a red warning about unsigned drivers. Upon rebooting, Windows will automatically disable the unsigned drivers. You need to press F8 every time at boot-up and select "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement" to run unsigned drivers.

Likewise, 32-bit drivers will not install on 64-bit Windows.

Have you tried letting Windows Update download your printer drivers? I personally never installed any of the junk software the printer mfg. I just use whatever drivers Windows 7 installed. It's an HP Deskjet 920c (very very old), although AIO printers are more difficult since they do depend on drivers from the vendors.

Well, all is not perfect under OS X either. I was just in OS X
and suddenly Finder went AWOL. The desktop icons vanished,
there was no menubar, the dock was still there but clicking an
item in the Dock did nothing. So I couldn't access the terminal
to geekily revivify the system. Ok, I thought, why not restart
Finder? I brought up the force quit dialog and behold:



There's nothing in it! Note: taking a screenshot of it was still
possible. Only the really useful options were impossible

Anyway, SHIFT+CMD+Q didn't work to logout and in the end
there was nothing I could do but press the power button.

The truth of the matter is that all the major operating systems
have flaky moments. But it's hard to say any one is more flaky
than another. So flakiness isn't a useful measure by which to
choose one over another.

I think the problem you're describing is a issue with VMWare Fusion's thinprint drivers. It seems similar to what you're describing.

that was the excuse for every buggy beta version windows that microsoft has released. unfortunately, the final version didnt magically fix most of the bugs

Yeah windows 7 is still Windows but it murders that piece of crap called Vista I have to say SL and Win 7 go very well together

Thanks for playing, but my Windows 7 is 100% released and legit straight from Microsoft.

It's a wireless AIO printer so Windows needs help to find it and get the right drivers in.

I think I see what may have caused the problem. The W7x64 drivers are version 1.02, and the English link on the Canon site gave me the 1.01 Vistax64 drivers, which don't seem to be compatible. The Spanish link correctly gives me the 1.02 drivers.

I think the problem you're describing is a issue with VMWare Fusion's thinprint drivers. It seems similar to what you're describing.

Now that's a lead. My VMWare is still the RC of 3.0, and I would not expect that the release version next week will fix this. Can you point me to a link that describes the issue?

I decided not to do the reinstall, yet, and played with some registry keys as described here http://www.inanis.net/blog/index.ph...er-reset-fix-999-of-windows-xp-printer-issues

After hacking away I got the XPS and Fax drivers back and was able to run the installer, but I must have missed something since it was still unable to create a new port.

I tried to do a system restore, but was only able to go back to earlier today and this again broke the spooler. I think I may have removed the VMWare printer drivers when I got it to kinda work briefly.

Thanks! It does sound very much like my problem. Right now I'm in OS X, but next time I spend quality time with Windows 7 I will try it out.

The frustrating part is the complete lack of information about what is really going wrong, and the only troubleshooting tips are to reboot or reinstall. I can't find a damn thing in Event Viewer that even says the print spooler is b0rk3d or why and the GUI shows no printers installed at all. According to the Management Console Services snap-in it is running just fine, and the registry shows all kinds of printer drivers installed.
