I got an XTi a few months ago, got the kit lens and the 50mm 1.8f.

I love the shots I get with the 50mm, but I hate that I have to be so far away to get everything I want in my shot. I take lots of photos at local music shows, and I can't really fit the stage in. I also don't use a flash since I like to capture the lighting at the show...

Basically, would the 17-70 be fast enough when wide open or about 25~30mm for not needing a flash? I tried the kit lens this weekend and got as close as possible with as much light as possible in the shot and they still were crappy.

I would like another prime, but they seem really expensive, and the 17-70 looks like a good stop gap. Any one have any other comments / suggestions? :)

Take a look at the Sigma 18-50 or Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (both). These are 2.8 throughout and will make for better "no flash" photog than the 17-70 which pretty much loses 2.8 when you leave 17mm.

I'd also recommend looking at the Sigma 30mm f/1.4. Nice wide-ish and very fast prime. Also pretty dang sharp.

What about Canon's new 18-55 IS lens? The f/2.8 lenses will give you one more stop of light at 25mm (f/2.8 vrs f/4) while the IS lens will give you a few stops of IS. I wonder how well that would work.

Of course, Canon's 17-55 f/2.8 IS would probably be ideal.
