Do you have to sign a new contract if you buy the iphone without the subsidy?

I bought my 3G from apple the begining of this year and had to sign a contract and pay full unsubsidized price.

I think they always wants to make you sign a contract for monthly service. I mean, we did for the original iPhone. That's why it makes sense to maximize your subsidy since you're stuck with the same commitment regardless.

I wounder would Apple or AT&T even let you straight up buy the phone at full retail w/no contract, letting you walk out the door with no further obligation to them, essentially with with an ipod with a built in compass??

I'd just assumed you'd have to brave ebay if you wanted to do that...at least until this initial rush calms down.

Yes you can. The no commitment price is $599 and $699 for the 16 and 32 gig 3GS. Walk into the Apple store and ask for a no commitment price iPhone and walk out. It's what I did. :)

That's a good point. As long as you're not starting new service you probably can.

Gotcha. Must be cool to be able to throw $700 at a cell phone :)

Well, I did the credit check and ATT asked me for a $500 deposit on top of the $299 sub. price. Which is $100 more that the no contract price. So I bought it no contract and dropped in the prepaid SIM from my 2G iPhone. I have a prepaid iPhone 3GS. :)

I am thinking about buying the new 32g 3GS. I am a little hessitant seeing as though I will have to pay the $200 "fine" Has there been a lot of people doing this?

I paid $499 for the phone... somehow i think i got gypped...
No you got fair deal, you just purchased an iPhone earlier this year and AT&T is giving you a $200 discount "Early Upgrade" price so you did not pay the "Full" price of $699 for the it.

So if you bought before March 25, 2009, you got the "reduced" discount pricing for the iPhone 3G. The "Full" retail price for the iPhone 3G 16 GB was $699 as of March 25, 2009.

Fine? A fine? Really? Really!

You're paying $200 to upgrade your phone early whereby you're paying $200 to break your contract terms.

Fine ....

ugh.

If you want the iPhone data plan then you have to sign for the two year commitment.

Dave

I thought that the data plan is required to use the iPhone on the AT&T network? So, not purchasing a data plan is not even an option.

According to my plan, if I drop $599/$699, I get a new iPhone without any contract - just a monthly bill. If I had the money, that's the way I would go. I would love having no contract.

Did it ask to activate via iTunes or anything? Just curious, I'd love to go pre-paid.

Not exacty correct. Just read the thread, there are many AT&T GoPhone customers that are purchasing the iPhone 3GS at the No Commitment price and then using it with a Pre-paid SIM option. So the iPhone data plan is "somewhat" optional depending on your plan, how much hassel you want to have to not have Visual Voicemail and many of the other iPhone data plan features for about $1 per day.

Most customers posting here on MacRumors must be able to save $1 per day on some activity to pay for the iPhone data plan. :D

The pick your plan iPhone accounts include unlimited data. I think you can't get pre-paid unlimited data without having a 1st gen iPhone. I maybe wrong.
