I have my ATV pulling most movies from my Mac Pro Itunes library.

However I want to put some (kids movies) directly on the ATV so my computer doesn't have to be running.

Within Itunes I see the apple TV, but I can't get movies to copy to it. How do I do this without breaking the streaming?

Note, these are not downloaded movies, they are ripped from DVD and encoded locally.

Normally, all you have to go is check the box next to the movie you want to sync to the Apple TV.

If the movies are not appearing under the "Movies" tab under the Apple TV, then the movies are not rip to a compatible file for the Apple TV. All Apple devices have specific restraints as to what types of files and bitrates can be played.

What did you use to encode them, and what format are they in?

By default, the iTunes attempts to do some 'smart' syncing. It fills the Apple TV with the newest movies, music, pictures, etc. It streams the rest.

If you choose 'Custom Sync', you get to choose what gets synced. There are some 'smart' options for Custom Sync, but I prefer to select the files/playlists manually.

Under the Custom Sync radio button, make sure that the box "Show only synced items on my Apple TV" is NOT checked.

The Apple TV will now play the stuff you selected to sync from local files and will stream the rest.

A.

I guess I'm not looking in the right place.

I'm sitting in itunes on my Mac Pro. I see the apple TV under devices, but if I click on it it just says summary or photos as the only tabs.

Under Itunes preferences I have an ATV tab, but there It just has "look for apple TV" checked and one listed "Apple TV" with Streaming in the second column but no other options available.

I can play these same moves ON the atv via streaming so i'm sure it's not an encoding issue (i'm using handbrake).

Obviously I'm missing something here. Appreciate the help, i'm sure it's something obvious to everyone else but me.

Nope - same page, but I only see Summary and Photos, all the other tabs are absent.

And the summary has just the top part, not the grey part with the checkboxes you show (no "sync" part).

You don't see the tabs because you don't have it set up for sync. What you have is set up for streaming. That's why you are missing tabs.

Go to Apple TV and Sync with your Mac. You will have to type the code that is shown on the TV in your iTunes.

Then all those tabs will show up.

That indeed was the problem, not sure how that didn't happen the first time, but it's working now. thanks!
