Just bout a 2G IPhone today and trying to unlock it for TMobile service. I did step by steps to download redsnow and what not. The guy who sold it said it was updated for 3.0, but when I'm following the steps to try and connect the IPhone to Itunes 8.2.1 the phone shows up on the left side, but on the right it reads "Sim Card Inserted in this IPhone does not appear to be supported" I'm stuck and not sure what to do. Please HELP! I do have a old TMobile Sim Card in the IPhone. Let me know what I can do...THANKS !

Go to Cydia and install BootNeuter. Then unlock your baseband through that. Or alternatively, you can restore your iPhone and then use redsn0w to unlock the iPhone. You'll need the bootloaders 3.9 and 4.6 though.

I don't know what BootNeuter is, I didn't need it and I had the exact problem as you have. Just jailbreak with redsnow, and then iTunes will recognize it.
