It's time to automate. I've been backing my files up manually for years, but now I'd like to have technology take the helm.

I have a Synology NAS as a server (of sorts) which works great for image storage etc. However, it doesn't look like Time machine allows use of any non-OSX hardware for backups.

Also, it appears that Carbon Copy Cloner is the same.

Thoughts? Ideas? I'm only looking for a simple, elegant method working with what I have. Thanks in advance.

Rsync

you shouldn't be scared to use command shell for that but it's a very nice program to backup/sync files across your network or local disks.
I use it also to backup my QNAP NAS to disk in addition.

I had too many issues with TC/TM. No more.

Put it in a script and call it in a scheduled way.

The Synology works great for TimeMachine without any issues. There is a whole section in the manual on how to set this up.

The latest QNAP firmware works with Timemachine including over wireless.

What he said.

I set up a Synology DS 110J for my sister and brother-in-law @ their house. Both of their Macbooks get backed up via TimeMachine to the NAS.

Being using a Netgear NAS for a few years and have had no issues with my MacPro.

My Synology 1511+ works great. I've got six Macs & five PC's on my network and it's proven to be very fast & stable.
