Simple laptop lid question

Folks,
Just got my new MBP tonight and was wondering if I could do something.
I'm currently downloading something - but the laptop appears to "hibernate" when I close down the lid (log out of MSN etc).
Is there a way I can set the laptop to continue to do everything as normal when I close the lid? I could leave it open, but I don't want dusk etc to get into it.
So to recap, can I close the lid and let the laptop act as normal, apart from turning off the screen, or course.

What you're looking for is similar to "clamshell mode." I believe that the only way this works is if you have an external display, keyboard, and mouse hooked up. This would enable your computer to be fully functional with the lid down.

But that doesn't appear to be what you're looking for.

There are hacks.. at least for PPC laptops, I don't know about the intel end. However, they are hacks, and I believe they void the warranty. Not a good idea.

I think even the PPC hacks only allow Apple's clamshell implementation on iBooks... but never allowed for the computer to stay on when closed and not plugged into any external peripherals....

Yeah, that's entirely possible. I never really took the time to actually figure out what they did since I have no reason to use it.

Just set the monitor to go to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity or something.

Well, I've had a similar situation and what I did was I went into System preferences -> Energy Saver -> Put the Display to Sleep... I put it for one minute when I'm off to bed, yeah it's a pain, and you can't keep your display closed w/o any peripherals.

That's what I do....

It used to be free, but the guy is trying to make a living. If you use it 10 times, the price seels right.
