Simple need- disk space usage

I have two Macs with nearly identical SSD sizes. One has a LOT more "stuff" on it than the other and I want to be sure that disk space isn't being chewed up by temp files and general useless garbage. First aid says it is "okay" on the one in question, so I think I may just have accumulated crap over time.

Is there a good way to clean out this stuff without a reload of macOS and re-entering the licensing for all the software?

tl;dr I just want to make sure disk space isn't being wasted on unneeded crap due to age.

There are also "cleaning" apps, such as Intego washing machine:



The problem with a program like this is that there are things, for example, in Downloads that I don't want to delete, like programs that I have purchased that charge for an extended download service.

In general I would be suspicious of cleaner programs, but I trust Intego.

And your suggestions led me to just what my issue was- VMs had proliferated, but since they were scattered and most had the same name, I didn't realize that I had so many of the same name! Thanks!!!!!!
