When you connect the iPhone to iTunes for the first time, when you synchronize the iPhone, does it by default make a backup copy on iCloud or on the PC (Windows in this case)?

iTunes will only back up on the hard drive of the computer it runs on. If you enable iCloud backup on your iPhone it doesn’t need an iTunes connection for the backup process to start.

But does it do it automatically? I mean, if you connect the iPhone to iTunes (without manually backing it up), does it just make a copy to disk?

The very first time an iPhone is plugged into iTunes, yes, it’s default action is to back it up and it’ll start doing it automatically without any user input.
But there is a toggle to prevent that in the future and you can easily delete backups if you want.

The default setting for iTunes is to make a backup when connected via cable. It’s one ongoing backup file, hence an incremental changes process.
