Needs to be on the current Mac Pro firmware (BootROM). See the first post of the thread below:Hi there,
can a 2009 4,1 that has been flashed to 5,1 and running Xeon x5590, 3.46Ghz 6-Core CPU automatically boot from a PCIe NVMe card?
Thx
I finally got round to installing an NVMe SSD in my 2009 and clean installed Mojave with no problems. I was already on the latest boot rom though. Only thing is it is much slower to boot than with a PCIe SATA drive for example but so far so good.Hi there,

I just meant the none NVMe SSDs on PCIe cards I have that are able to get SATA 3 speeds via PCI slots. Usually it’s just a PCIe card or adapter with a SATA port or two or there’s more advanced versions with different types of port and connections. NVMe is faster though but it’s slower to boot than the AHCI / SATA 3 cards.PCIe SATA??? What do you mean by that?
I've had that experience as well, NVME was slow to boot Mojave but very snappy when logged in. I didn't see the point in continuing with the NVME (for me, others will have different uses) so I swapped it out for a pair of SATA SSD sleighs to get more fast storage.I just meant the none NVMe SSDs on PCIe cards I have that are able to get SATA 3 speeds via PCI slots. Yep it’s not too bad but it’s just long enough to make me worry something has gone wrong! That is probably what I’d do too if I had to get another PCIe option. I moved my 3,1 to PCIe SSD so wanted a new option for my 4,1 but I’m trying to keep Mac Pro purchases to a minimum and hopefully only to more ‘future proof’ items.I've had that experience as well, NVME was slow to boot Mojave but very snappy when logged in. Same here. When I eventually move to a full windows desktop (leaving my iMac as my Apple device) I'll have a ton of PCIE storage options lol.Yep it’s not too bad but it’s just long enough to make me worry something has gone wrong!
