Simple Questions

I had a couple of questions as a possible Apple TV buyer:

1. Can I do something, like play Warcraft or write a paper, on my Macbook Pro while the Apple TV streams video or music from that same Macbook Pro without interfering with each other?

2. Can I play any video or music on my computer on the Apple TV, provided that I can open it in iTunes?

1. You shouldn't have any problems doing this. I do stuff like this on my G5 all the time.

2. If it works in iTunes, it pretty much will play on the AppleTV. At least that is my experience.

1. Yes, iTunes can happily stream content while you do other things.

2. No. The Apple TV has specific requirements for video, from Apple:

H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store):
• up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution 1280x720 @ 24fps, 960x540 @ 30fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
• iTunes Store purchased video, 320x240, 640x480, 720 by 480 pixels (anamorphic), or high-definition 720p
MPEG 4:
• up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution 720x432 @ 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file format


Quicktime can play many other types of movies. Just because iTunes/Quicktime can play it does not mean that the Apple TV can play it.
