Is there any text app out there with a simple but more attractive interface then textedit, something between textedit and word? Preferably free?

I was just looking for exactly what you're describing for a friend--a bit more full-featured than TextEdit (of which the Panther version is actually pretty good--that's what she ended up using), but not as bloated and expensive as word.

The answer I came up with is called Mellel. It's a $25 piece of shareware that has everything most people really want in a text editor (the interface even looks a bit like Word X, but not so hectic), nothing more. It has full Unicode support, like TextEdit, for those who like writing in multiple languages, it has solid support for adjusting fonts and layout, and it just feels like a well built application.

I highly recommend taking it for a test spin, and $25 if you like it sure beats several hundred for Word.

(Just for reference, TextEdit is the best I found for free.)

Yes OpenOffice.org is free but requires X11 and is not as nice looking as it is not OS X-native and doesn't have an aqua interface. However, it is free and is as powerful as Microsoft Office (and as compatible). Also, ThinkFree Office is something like £30 ($50) and maybe worth looking into.

I went for MS Office as I needed the ultimate compatibility and ease of use - and it's (only!!) £115 with student discount. I use Word, Excel and PowerPoint regularly for my course so it was worthwhile.

Apple has long been rumoured to release "iWorks" or the like - an MS Office competitor, so it may be worth waiting for. It'll cost though... Personally I would like to get Keynote, but I can't justify spending £60 (education) when I have PowerPoint...
