Growing pains August 18, 2008 · Filed under status, iPhone, simplifyblog

We launched the first version of Simplify Media last summer. For the past year, we’ve experienced smooth growth, but all of that changed dramatically less than 4 days ago when our application debuted in the Apple App Store. Our (aggressive) target was to have 100,000 downloads in 30 days. Instead we reached that goal in about 30 hours. As of last night, we had 205,909 downloads.Your generous reaction to Simplify Media has exceeded our wildest projections. Blogs like: Gizmodo, Lifehacker, TUAW, CrunchGear and Download Blog and forums / news sites like: modmyifone, MacRumors, AppleInsider, MacBidouille and digg are filled with encouraging comments. However, there have also been people who ran into trouble.

The overwhelming response has caused us to experience some growing pains:

Infrastructure: We discovered two problems with our servers (one Friday and another last night) that forced us to scramble. That meant many of you couldn’t connect for a period of time.

Product: We learned that two of our features, album art on the iPhone and password reset, weren’t scalable, so we disabled these. If you have forgotten your password, email us from the address associated with your screen name.

Support systems: We found out that our email provider enforces a hard limit on the number of email we can send per day.

Now we face a dilemma. According to the “free for the first 100,000″ plan we announced, we should be charging for new downloads. However, we are not confident that we can deliver a user experience that meets our expectations (and yours) until we work out a few more kinks. As a result, we’ve decided to remain free for a while longer as we make improvements. In return, we ask for your continued patience as we work through the growing pains.

A final note: to stay ahead of the curve, we are schedule a maintenance window on 8/19 from 9:00 -9:30a Pacific, that’s tomorrow

wow 205,900

Whoa, no wonder the server has been a little slow connecting sometimes.

Great news for them though and thanks for a great product.

Thanks for posting this -- explains the missing artwork.

It's great to hear they are doing so well, and it's a really fantastic app that has run (mostly) smooth for me. It's cool to hear they are extending their free offer until it's working perfectly for them.

But just like with the MobileChat guys, I'm really surprised by the low expectations these developers have for their obviously-in-demand applications. I'm no market researcher, or expert on these types of things, but I (and a good number of my friends) all predicted that this app (and MC) would sell several hundred thousands downloads within the first week -- and that was us being conservative. It's a pretty easy thing to guess, just from casually reading a few articles here and there on the net. I'm surprised there's no actual research done by these companies first to gauge interest.
Yeah, the app store is a new concept and all, and there's little precedent -- but man...I think most "average" people could have guessed at better sales.

Glad to hear they are doing what they can to get things back in running order. Unlike with MobileChat, this app has worked 95% of the time I wanted it to (with MC, it's been about 5% -- which sucks, considering it's a paid app, and SM is free). I assumed the times SM hasn't worked was due to a high volume of users. The only UI problems I've had, besides the missing artwork which is now explained, is that sometimes the text on the "artist" and "lyrics" tabs gets cut off. Hopefully that gets fixed too!

Agree on the underestimation of interest

I have to agree on how Simplify Media seemed to vastly underestimate the interest their product would generate. Just reading their blog it says the "jailbroken" app was downloaded over 200,000 times! Now, you factor in everybody who wasn't willing/didn't know how to jailbreak their original iPhone, and add to that the large influx of new iPhone users across the globe with the new AppStore directly on their home screen; and the 100,000 figure in 30 days seems like a joke. I guess it's not a bad problem to have but still...

1. Keep Free = More Downloads = More Server Strain = Poor Performance

2. Charge for App = Less Downloads = Less Server Strain = Better Performance + Cash for Developers

I think they got their math wrong!

+1... however Charge for app + poor stability = angry customers/users = bad app store ratings = mobilechat right now.

they've got a great product... but had they stuck to the plan... 205,000 - 100,000 = 105,000 * 3.99 = ~420,000 * 70% = 294,000 could have been made by the developers!

These guys put something together that a hell alot of users were screaming, begging and pleading for and they came through with flying colors. They underestimated the demand and fell a little short...SO WHAT...you complain???

These guys had the courage and sense to start a thread to explain and inform of what was going on....offered MORE FREE DOWNLOADS...while they fix things and get it up and running even better and you have the GALL to
COMPLAIN????

Gentlemen...I thank you for an outstanding APP and all you have done to increase my listening pleasure. THANK YOU!

You posters prior to me really SUCK!!! You ungrateful, whining little bratts!!! You just totally disgust me and your selfish comments. When are you going to wake up and pull your heads out of your 4th point of contact!!

Huh? Are we reading the same thread? I only saw one post that I felt could be classified as a complaint. The rest was discussing the pros and cons of offering the app for free.

Yeah agreed. I thought it was a little much for only one real "complaint" post. Anyway I do love the app and would gladly pay money for it. Can't wait till the next release. You know it's only going to get better and better!

Plus one for a super happy user of this fantastic app

This app has been pretty stable for me on 3G. Buffer speeds are faster then with the last.fm app.

Easily the best app on my phone

The only app I would pay money for, and it's free

the goods

thanks for making it

Love it and I've only played with two others iTunes. I just may have to buy a CREED and Justin Nozuka albums after this.

Really great app! One question....

Is something going on with playlists showing up?

I had everything working fine via wifi and my iPhone. But the playlists have all disappeared leaving the All Album, All Genres, All Songs, etc. being the only options showing.

This happened after I added the first user to my group.

Just wondering if others see the same thing and if I'm missing something. But I had changed my settings in iTunes and the playlists had been showing fine.

The cover art and lyrics function is amazing.

Worked fine for me since I had it.

Had to reset it once on my mac but that is it.
