Hey guys,

People with iPhone 3GS jailbroken phones + ipads, can you try running the following and see if there is a noticeable difference between wifi and 3G

  • Netflix
  • Abc player
  • YouTube

Basically trying to see if I can justify keeping the wifi only version of the ipad. The 3G looks really enticing if i can stream shows from abc and netflix in a reasonable time.

Thanks

Ok actually I finally got around to loading the abc app and watched a show using wifi. Now I will try it using mywi and report back with an edit:apple:

Edit: I also made sure my local wifi profile was removed (forget this network setting) from both the iphone & ipad first so as to only use mywi between the ipad & iPhone cell data network.

OK works great statistically speaking I watched Private Practice for 3 minutes and it translated overall into 15mb down & 0.48mb up. Once I stopped the abc app the data transfer report from mywi was for the most part at a stand still. I like how the iPhone mywi gives these statistics doesn't look as if there is much behind the scenes data transfer from apple going on here.

Thanks for asking this question has made me think of many test bed trials. Currently still using the mywi to post the results HEHE love technology.

With these kind of statistics makes me wonder why AT&T even offers anything besides an unlimited 3G iPad plan LOL. Think I will stick to the mywi method and for those who don't hack can plan on a $30 up charge to watch abc.

Dang I love my wifi iPad!

Don't like

One thing I just noticed I don't like!

Not a show stopper but there is no ability to lock abc in landscape mode while watching a show.

One thing I do like is the new masters 2.01 golf update man this iPad is going to come in very handy this weekend :D

Thanks for the update! Keep it up!

I'm curious how well 3G will work with these two programs

HUh? Just switch the rotation lock switch?

Anyways, both these apps work fine over my Sprint 3G tethering via wifi. Little bit of a buffering time, and looks like Netflix is giving you the second to best quality, but works fine.

Verizon 3G and Netflix work fine. FWIW, I've found Verizon to be faster than ATT in my area (based on experience and simultaneous speed tests on an iPhone and a Droid)

I have a 20mbps download connection in my home and I have a 2mbps connection on my sprint phone that I use as a router when Im out. the video quality for me is the same HD resolution, the only diferrence is that it takes a few seconds more to buffer and load pictures.

ABC player works for me on landscape using my sprint phone as a modem too.

even with a 600kbps conection it works great.

Streaming via tethered 3GS works wonderfully in both apps for me. :)

Obviously, YMMV depending on your 3G connection.

oh? Hmm i can watch abc in lanscape and it works fine but if I click the screen Rotation lock it switches back to portrait. Have you not tried this I must be missing something for sure?

I just tried it again and when I click the rotation lock it switches back to portrait are you saying I can reverse the setting this is strange?

Hmmm this is looking good.

Now the real question: Will Abc and netflix allow streaming through "3G" networks or is it Wifi only?

Hm, weird! You are correct ANC i take it back. I just assumed that would work... I hadn't tried it because I use my iPad in the Apple case wedge mode so it stays in landscape orientation for me. Sorry about that!
