...which route will you go?

Buy an (i)Mac Proprietary anyway?
Or finally switch to Windows like so many have already?

I'm torn. And the third choice of building a hack has become a lot more unsafe again with the news that ARM chips are included now on Apples boards.

You know... The argument of AV is rather old. Sure it does and can get viruses, but I have been running my Win10 laptop with Avast for over 2 years now with no incident and it still runs faster than my Macbook Pro without AV.

Bottom line? I still prefer my windows machine for a daily grinder. The macbook has its place, but I still turn to MS or Linux for all my heavy lifting.

What a load of crap. I'm off Mac Pro for a year soon, never've seen virus on my PC (which is cheaper than my nMP and much more powerful) once.

Just don't run every file you download off internets and don't use IE/Edge. Kinda basic stuff.

P.S. What you're saying is basically "Hey, sex with protitutes might give you STDs, so you should not have sex ever, because STDs".

I did that, no regrets so far. Apple workstations are gone for good.

building a hack

Don't. Way to much troubles and problems for too little gain. Windows 10 is allright actually, almost comparable to OS X.

I went down this route as well and if you don't have specific hardware, you are probably going to have a lot of issues. I'm not against hackintosh, but it does take a person who is willing to work through issues or be happy with some bugs. Win10 does work well, but if you are vested in eco system, I can see the draw to OS X.

It also should be mentioned that if you go Hackintosh route you'd be mostly using previous generation components. Which will end in previous generation system (but very cheap indeed).

I was considering that but decided against due to way to much maintenance required (my stuff is cross-platform anyway).

The "Pro" approach of "fling money at the beefiest components" wouldn't work. :)

Already sold my nMP and bought a Windows PC instead. No regrets whatsoever. The only thing's I miss from OS X/iCloud is messages (desktop and mobile integration) and the way full screen mode works with VM's and Fusion. I get a similar messages experience with WhatsApp, but the Mac is better at handling full screen apps. Other than that I prefer the PC - I get complete freedom of choice with hardware and Windows 10 has been very stable.

I still prefer OS X, but given the way Apple hardware has been developed of late I can't see me going back, especially given that Apple seem to be bumping up their prices significantly with each new release.

So long as you have some AV software and you are sensible about your browsing habits that should cover most things. There's no reason for anyone to panic about 'Windows getting viruses all the time' because for most people that's simply not true.

Aw come on, you know that as long as you don't plug in your net cable, your fine, and is Win10 a great system,
but unfortunately, you loose great deal of privacy, and Win10 is still really susceptible to all kinds of malware and trojans that can be installed without you even knowing.
if you know what you are doing, then you are relatively safe, but for average users it is still not really safe, unfortunately !

There is still no "1 to rule them all" anti virus scanner, you need at least 3 to be 90% safe.

Getting a virus with just one decent AV is difficult. In fact, you will cause problems running multiple AVs and I don't ever recommend that.

Getting malware without knowing can be done on Windows or Mac actually. My guess is that there are a lot of folks with Malware on mac that don't realize it.

Privacy? Not had a problem and been running Win10 since beta.

My mother runs Win10 with a decent av and has had few issues. Stay off crap sites and you won't get the things you just listed.

I have a dedicated Win10 Laptop just for my 3D scanner, (runs only on Win software) I don't ever run any browser at all, just to upload files to Dropbox,
but I have to clean the laptop every 3 weeks, to get rid of of trojans and keyloggers.
don't use any memory card or other storage devices plugged into the laptop.

Then I might suggest that you have bigger issues on your network then. I take my laptop with me on business trips and plug into various networks and have yet to get anything.

I used to get Malware but found it was the sites that people were sharing on Facebook, so now I just use my iPad if I want to use that site (which is rare).

Again, you can get infected, but if you are staying off of crap sites, the possibility is minimal.

OS X is nice but it is not the end all OS. Again, I use it for a lot of things, but my heavy lifting is still done with Windows and Linux.

Yeah, because Apple wouldn't log your data and send it somewhere, right? It's not like iPhone logs and sends data back to Cupertino, right?

People, you've got to grow up and realise, that any consumer OS has no privacy at all. They all mine and sell your data to the highest bidder. You, the user, are the commodity.

If you want privacy - use paranoid Linux distros with Tor, not OS X or Windows.

P.S. In Windows you can disable majority of spying and null-route MSFT data collector hosts, that would make it comparable to OS X in terms of privacy.

but I have to clean the laptop every 3 weeks, to get rid of of trojans and keyloggers.

Obviously there is a major issue with your network.

I have half a dozen computers at home, Mac/PC/Linux, even more VMs for development and have AV only on my PC desktop. Don't remember ever seeing a virus in my network.

Apple has just gotten to the point where they don't much care about the Mac line, with so much of their profits coming from the iPhone/iPad.

They really don't care if people jump the Mac ship, as they continue to try and make Mac's more "i" like. Doing things they know people don't want, like soldering ram to the logicboard.

They may turn it around with the modular Mac Pro and iMac Pro, but I'm not that hopeful.

I put a dent in my Mac Pro funds to build a new PC, but they should be recovered by the time the mMP ships. If Apple can't make an offering that has real PCI-E slots, then I'm done buying Mac products.

This kind of anti-microsoft propaganda gets us nowhere. I work in the recording industry. Apple use to have a headlock in this area. All the big audio companies like UAD use to produce audio hardware that worked with Apple hardware only. Because apple has dropped the ball in the last few years in pro hardware space, companies like UAD are starting to produced windows only hardware. Apple needs to face facts that there is a professional migration to windows. Only by facing the problem will this issue get fixed.

Couldn't agree more. Until 18 months ago all my kit was Apple, then when I couldn't get a new laptop as I need more than 16GB RAM I was forced to look elsewhere. Bit by bit I've swapped it all out as I don't see any roadmap for Apple products other than consumer laptops and all-in-one desktops, neither of which suit my needs. It's a shame as OS X works very well.

When I was an AppleCare agent, most of my time was spent getting malware/adware off Macs. Easily more than half my calls.

I've added a fourth SSD to my cMP and installed Windows 10 on it, just so I can be completely comfortable with the latest Windows OS when these Macs die, and Apple hasn't made a comparable Mac Pro update. I've used both Mac and PC since about 1995, but when my current gear dies, I really doubt any more Apple gear will be purchased. I'm tired of all the hassle to make a system what I need it to be.

All the years I use Windows. I never got a virus, but then I don't do dumb stuff.

Tho some versions of Windows are a virus.

How so? Windows contains code that snoops on you, but it's not a virus. It doesn't spread to other computers. Ubuntu does snooping too (but to a lesser extent than Windows 10), but not many on here say anything about that. And how certain are you that Apple doesn't collect personal information on you and sell it on?

We sadly live in an age where we have given up privacy for convenience and the big corps are chipping away at us bit by bit. You do have a choice, you can sacrifice some of this convenience for a Linux based distro such as Tails but good luck to you if you use your machine for any creative tasks.

Ok. technically not a "virus", but Vista was a piece of malware.

When you are ready to buy have a look at the new AMD kit. Lots of CPU performance for not a lot of money.

Mate, you've got it wrong there. Vista wasn't a virus, Vista was a piece of ***** ;)
