I guess this only partially has to deal with the iPhone, but here goes. We all know that Apple tends to give consumers white (this is before blackbook and black iPod people :)) products, and pro customers, the aluminum. Now the iPhone is a consumer product, and only comes in one color..black, and has a touch of aluminum at the back, with no option for white. And with the current iMac line soon being replaced..do you think that Apple will soon push a new black lineup for it's consumer products? I sure hope so, as black is the new white :)

Sorry if this was OT.

The material that houses the mac (don't know what it exactly is) but if that was in a black color, ie a whole black / silver mac, then yes, i think that would look pretty awesome.

yeah, but....

Interesting thought but then again we have two new products the :apple: tv and the wireless base station which our both white and came out fairly recently, but who knows? Maybe this is a hint at a new direction:eek:

i like that the iphone is black, but i woudn't have been bothered if it came in white or a variety of colors (except silver). i'm really tired of the aluminum look, more than i am of the white. one color i wouldn't mind seeing on an iphone, though, is red. how hot would a (red) iphone be?

isnt the apple tv an aluminum type color, not white

Personally, I don't see Apple replacing white with black anytime soon. The iPhone launch was BIG and you and I both know... and two models, with two colors, would have made for a real headache on Apple's part. I don't know if this will be an issue for any other Apple product in the near future. :apple:

No doubt, or some exotic material like Carbon Fiber...

that would be crazy cool. Perhaps not feasible (perhaps I should do more research on carbon fiber for that ... sure does well on bike frames... hehe no heat there though) but darn crazy cool. Sure would increase durability and look darn nifty... specially since there are quite a few really durable options for finishing carbon fiber too. hehe.

hmm gunmetal. neat.

I remember when...

i remember when all laptops were black or gunmetal grey plastic and the titanium g4 powerbooks were a breath of fresh air. Now you want to go back to black?

i propose chrome. :D

The black was only done because of the screen, it makes the whole phone looking like it is all screen.
White with the black screen would have looked to broken up and would have made the screen look way smaller.

But that's just my reasoning and may be wrong :)

i didn't think of that. that actually makes a lot of sense. :apple:

I think the reason for the iPhone colors being what they are is as follows:

1. Black front to keep appearance uniform with the LCD screen. A white front would not match well with the LCD given how much of the front would be black screen and how little would be white.

2. Being a portable device that will get touched on its face, white would show oils and dirt much more. Black hides dirt and oils better.

3. Aluminum backing required for the same reason they incorporated it in mac pro, iMac and apple tv... Aluminum dissipates heat very efficiently and acts thus as an exterior heatsink/baffle that reduces both venting and active cooling requirements.

I think that we may see more of this look in apple's future multitouch platforms but it wouldnt necessarily be exactly the same for their desktops as the design requirements are driven by a different UI and their respective functions and environments call for a different aesthetic.
