Since when is software not a product?

Reading WWDC news and the common theme is that WWDC was boring because no new products were announces. That it was maybe exciting for developers (shocking considering it is a developer conference) but a real snoozer for consumers. Since when is software not considered a product? And why is it that Apple gets knocked for being just a "hardware company" (because according to Wall Street hardware is a low margin commodity business) yet when they have an event all about software and the Apple ecosystem these same people knock it for being boring.

To me that's basically the media's way of creating a no win situation for Apple. Predict doom and gloom calling Apple just a hardware company with competitors who can sell their hardware cheaper. And then when Apple shows its about so much more than hardware predict doom and gloom and call Apple boring because we didn't get any new hardware.

I'm glad this event was all about software and all about developers. And Apple set themselves up to have an amazing fall when new hardware is announced. I saw lots of tweets in my twitter feed from people who said the features announced today are making them seriously consider going back to iPhone. Imagine what will happen when fall comes around and we get a new iPhone with a larger screen.

The issue is it's the World Wide Developer Conference.
It's aimed at the developers directly. And us consumers indirectly by giving the devs better tools to make us better apps. This year's main keynote was different as it was a lot more developer focused. Not surprising as it is the WWDC. But I think there is so much dev stuff to talk about, there would not be enough time in the "state of the Union" keynote of it all.

Also I think Apple want the general public who watch the main keynote to understand how hard the developers work.

It's clear that Apple was really focused on the software/developer side of things this year, especially with all the new APIs, new programming language, etc. And like you said, they've set themselves up for a great fall.

Anyway, no hardware was expected at the software dev conference. Wished for, sure. Expected, no.

HomeKit, the minority owns devices need for it to work.
HK will be a bust similar to newsstand and other apps. I can almost guarantee it. Is almost a folder to put other apps in so far… HIPPA laws etc won't let you have what apple showed when you go to a dr and the dr won't pay extra to have gadgets that can do that either.
TI api we shall see when and who integrates it, but is nothing new, we have had touch id since last year, just not fully implemented
workflow in another device will require you have the latest OS and if you have been with apple you will know that anything more than 2years old in the mac side will not support it, same w/ calls, etc
fam device management is nothing amazing, just them fixing a problem that has been increasing for them to try to keep things in a family together.
Again, while nice, nothing that gives me a wow factor.

No. All the analyst I saw on CNBC, Bloomberg etc. that were negative were so because no new shiny gadgets were announced. To them Apple is a hardware company only and software announcements are no big deal. Except these are the same people bearish on Apple because they consider hardware a low margin commodity and the Samsung's of the world are going to destroy Apple. Thing is many of the things Apple announced at WWDC are all about making the hardware NOT a commodity. Apple has a unique value proposition that all these other companies running Android don't. That's why their either in a race to the bottom on price or spec overkill like 2K phone displays.
