I don't mean to disparage OWC in any way. But in looking around for used mac pro's I found their ads to be confusing. I called them but did not get much reassurance…for this particular "2010 2.66ghz 12 core model" I was told that it was upgraded from a 4 core.

I can't find anywhere where this type of processor exists? Also, anything to be wary of? I would prefer 2 cpus at 6 cores. Why I don't know. Just seems better weight distribution.

OWC ad, under specs:

Machine Specifications

Apple Mac Pro - Mid 2010*
2.66GHz 12-core
Model ID: MacPro5,1 View how to find model ID
Processor / Memory
One 2.66GHz 12-Core Intel Xeon X5650 processor
32GB (4x8GB) 1066MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM memory
Four Memory Slots
OWC Memory Upgrades: Add up to 96GB of memory. OWC certified for up to 96GB of memory.

Possible they switched a single socket tray for a dual and added two CPUs, or they mean two 4-core to two 6-core.

Thanks. No, this is their ad. It says one 12 core cpu. And I called and asked and they confirmed this, and the reason why there are only 4 memory slots….

Thank you lou. Appreciate your thoughts on my last thread too. That's what I'm exploring…waiting for one client to pay up.

Since it clearly state that there are only 4 RAM slots, and with 4x8G RAM onboard. So, I am 99% sure that's a single CPU Mac Pro 5,1.

For the 12 core spec, I guess they count all real and virtual cores. That's a bit trickery.

For that up to 96G of RAM. I bet that you need to pay a lot of money to upgrade from the single CPU tray to a dual CPU tray in order to make it happen. ;)

Thanks. h9826790. This is why I called them. Didn't add up. And then why I posted here. What they said didn't add up either….

looks like your machine in your signature is basically what I'm after. How does that run? I do video editing on premiere pro and some work on after effects. I have a 5770 card.

Thanks.

A single CPU 5,1 Mac Pro with an X56xx CPU can run a maximum of 64GB RAM. So yes, many aspects of their add is FOS.

I upgrade from a 2.66 Quad + HD4870 stock 4,1. I am not in the area of video editing, so can't comment on it. However, My Mac Pro run 24/7 as a server, plus I will do some video rendering, photoshop, x-plane, 3D gaming, virtual machine, etc. The machine now actually runs better than I expect. Very responsive and reliable.

Oh, for crying out loud, it's a typo, and the customer service guy wasn't on the ball enough to understand the impossibility of what they have advertised.

FWIW, I have generally had a good experience with OWC, but customer service is patchy anywhere.

Me too. A reliable but overpriced shop. But this was an ad, confirmed by customer service, and reiterated by technical support.

It's why I thought it was odd and worth seeking independent opinion as I am seeking to buy a used Mac Pro.

Where did tech support come in? All you stated was customer service confirmed it? News flash customer service knows nothing but what is in front of them on the ads and/or scripts. It would be like asking me how to do a vasectomy. Sure I know the basics and could talk intelligently about the procedure but I wouldn't know the true technical details if you asked me....

Oh, for crying out loud, it's a typo, .

This. Perhaps in part driven by the fact that Intel has pulled 3500/3600 Xeons from the retail market (http://www.cpu-world.com/news_2013/...ues_Xeon_3500_and_3600_server_processors.html). To avoid the used ( or dusty and shrinking inventory) market they probably have to move to 6 core, 5600 series parts to do a 6 core upgrade at this point. ( 5600 will continue a bit longer http://www.cpu-world.com/news_2013/...tinues_E3-1200_and_5600_series_Xeon_CPUs.html )

Looks like a sloppy merge between the tech description of the X5650 which up until now only got sold in pairs (hence, 12 cores) and the new reality of having to sell them as singles for single config upgrades.

This has been standard operating procedure for Intel for at least the last decade.

Except for a few "long term support" SKUs, SKUs are dropped from the list when replacements are available.
