Hello!

Recently, I have been trying to use Single User Mode and have ran into a problem. When I try to mount / as read/write, I get ”operation not permitted,” “mount failed : error 77” (Errors are not verbatim, more so from memory) I have used the command said in booting process, “To Mount the root filesystem as read/write, do /sbin/mount -X /“ but that has not worked either. Why might this be?

Thanks in advance!

The Read-only System volume
Perhaps the single, largest change in macOS Catalina is the manner in which the System volume is mounted on startup – it's read-only. By mounting the volume read-only, it becomes impossible for attackers to make changes to the content of the macOS System volume. That doesn't mean that your Mac is 100% free from all possible attack vectors, rather it's just another line of defense against them.

Thanks for the quick reply! So the root filesystem is completely blocked. Why would they present the prompt to write on it in single user mode?
