Siri for Desktop?

Will this ever be a reality?

I would quite like to walk into my office and say "Siri, open Mac Rumors website" or "Siri, what applications do i have for editing audio files" etc

or even "Siri, i'm going to bed, record all phone calls and wake me in 8 hours"

Im actually surprised it didn't debut In Yosemite. Now that I can call and text from my Mac, there are many times when Siri is noticeably missing.

Anyway the issue with Siri integration on the mac is due to the microphone.

I believe now the late 2013 and up model have dual microphones that now would be possibly allow Siri to work properly. I'm guessing the follow up to Yosemite may have Siri but may be only for select models with dual microphones.

I don’t think the microphone argument is very convincing though. If that were the case, Apple wouldn’t have added dictation to the Mac. I suspect the voice recognition capabilities are there, regardless of the dual microphones. On my 2008 MacBook it works pretty well too. Besides, if Apple waited till the hardware would become better, then they’ve missed that opportunity again, since, as you said, later Macs have dual microphones.

No, I think Apple is intentionally holding back Siri for other reasons. Perhaps it falls under the category: does it make sense? But I would find it more difficult to justify that. Being able to tell Siri to create a reminder or appointment would be very handy indeed, and the new ‘Hey Siri’ feature would be perfect for the Mac as well. Perhaps the usage cases are more limited, although that would be debatable, Apple’s present VoiceOver Utility is just mediocre. It would benefit from Siri’s technology too, so they’re not opposed to the idea of adding voice control either way.

That feel when OSX already has voice control (that's in ways more powerful but less user friendly than siri) and dictation and you just don't realize it

Side note : they did rename spoken commands to dictation commands in Yosemite.

Ha, I just spent the last 10 minutes asking "Computer, what time is it" only to be greeted with deafening silence. And I tinkered with every single option too. Although at one point it randomly said "Knock knock" to me lol

While the latter will DEFINITELY not be a command available anytime soon, I think it's possible that Siri fill find it's way to Mac OS sometime. If not in a future Yosemite update then definitely by the next version.

I personally don't see the need for it, but then I really don't use Siri on the iPhone either.

There's an app called Sinus (http://raffael.me/sinus/) that's getting close to being "Siri for the desktop". You can even pick the Samantha voice.
