for some reason my phone when activating Siri no longer makes the quick "DaDA" sound, seems turning my volume up having the mute switch off or anything won't bring it back (for the record it does do a vibrate)

What am I missing?

Nothing. It doesn't make a sound anymore.

...if you press and hold the home button to activate Siri. You will get a tone if you have a newer 6S and say "Hey Siri" and you will get a tone if you press and hold the home button while connected to a bluetooth speaker or say your car. I guess they felt it was intrusive to have the tone when the phone is right in your hand and you can see already she is ready to go.

The sound was removed in favor of vibrations in the 9.0 betas and they stuck with that to 9.1. Admittedly, I miss the sound. I've even submitted a feature request for a Siri activation sound toggle in settings.

i kind of miss the sound with hey siri now.

only reason is cause my phone might be on my coffee table, and ill say hey siri, and i wont know if it heard me or not.

if there is a way to toggle it when I use hey siri, that would be amazing.

Pretty sure the sound should still be there when "Hey Siri" is used.

Awful decision if thats the case!

Spent all day trying to fix this "problem", after installing iOS 9.1 on my iPhone 5c today, when in fact it's a feature.

But it makes no sense, select siri in Search, it makes a sound. Select Voice Control (with Siri turned off) from the home button, it makes a sound. Press the home button on my iPad mini 2 with iOS 9.1 and it makes a sound. Must be a bug.

As for "Hey Siri!", wouldn't it be better if she replied "Hi/Hey!" rather than a tone?

Apple recently made a big deal of having GUI consistency, perhaps they need it for audio (and other functions too).

Saving data and restoring from backup. :/

The iPad mini has the tone because it has no vibrate. Also you're supposed to say something after you say Hey Siri, ex "Hey Siri, what's the weather tomorrow?" If you say nothing after Hey Siri then Siri will say something.

The tone in iPhone 6 and below only works with "hey Siri" whether use it while plugged in or when u press the home button, and then when it's on the Siri screen just say hey Siri to move on with the convo

I don't mind it not beeping anymore, but my 6s+ doesn't even vibrate. My 5 vibrates, but not the 6s, and yes, I have tried it with "Vibrate On Ring" toggled. I think there should be a separate setting in Sounds for Siri beep/vibrate, instead of relying on the Vibrate On Ring toggle, which I usually keep toggled off, BTW.
I've tried rebooting and hard resetting the 6s, but I still can't get it to vibrate. Looks like a restore is in my future..LOL

Restoring won't do you any good. The 6s is working exactly as it's supposed to. The basic breakdown of Siri and vibrations/sounds is as follows:

iPhone 4s – iPhone 6/6+
Home button: Vibrate
Headphones: Sound
"Hey Siri:" Sound

iPhone 6s/6s+
Home button: Nothing
Headphones: Sound
"Hey Siri:" Sound

Why the seeming inconsistency between the 6 and 6s? Simple:

On the 6 and below, when you activate Siri using the home button, there is a slight delay between when you press the button and when Siri is ready to accept input. The sound/vibration is there to let you know when it's OK to start talking.

On the 6s, Siri is ready to accept input immediately after you hold the home button. In fact, you can technically start talking slightly before hitting the button and it will still pick up the beginning of your input. This is presumably related to the new hardware that supports always-on "Hey Siri". The audio/vibration prompt serves no purpose when you can start talking immediately. In fact, it would simply introduce an unnecessary delay in using Siri.

That makes sense, but it sure looks like the documentation would reflect that.

Anyways, I found a way around this by going to Settings>General>Accessibility and turning Vibration off.
This is system wide for iOS, apps, games, notifications and even for emergency alerts.

But I feel like I've got my iPhone back.

I appreciate other peoples explanations as why Apple went with just vibrate, and they do make sense.
But for me, it's how it feels. Or sounds.
