Sister's off to college!

I'm calling the cops
And no I can't have her room:)

Anyways, she needs a laptop. The campus had an Apple kiosk so I'm guessing they'll allow macs. Now an intel iBook would be the best for her I know. Yet, there's only the macbook. I really wasn't her to get intel because this thing will have to last her 4 and a half years. When is the intel iBook coming out? My dad and I are planning on getting it to her by June 1st or so.

But let's say that's not an option and only the MacBook is available.

I looked at the base model and upgraded the ram to 1gb, added apple care, and a keyboard and mouse(for working at a desk).

Yet what about Microsoft Office? Will that be needed? There is always iWork. Mostly she's going to be typing, making presentations, going on iChat, listening to iTunes, ad surfing the net, and maybe the occasional photo work cause she takes a LOT of myspace pics.

SO the Macbook Pro is more then enough for now.

I just need some input.
 
Nobody knows for certain, but if it is to last 4.5 years why not just shell out a bit more dough and get a MBP?
 
You NEED Office

Many teachers still send out notes and assignments in word or powerpoint format. I've never seen a free viewer for OS X, so you gotta have Office. The academic version isn't ridiculous, though.
 
You really need Microsoft Office in college. I'm well into my time there now and I've needed it on a pretty consistent basis. If you're looking to save some money, skip the keyboard/mouse. Probably won't get much use -- the space you get on desks is rediculous.

But wait and get it at the academic price...it's like 1/3 of the price...assuming you're actually buying.
 
Oh, and spend $50 and get a lock for it...especially if she'll be living in dorms...things walk, even when your back is only turned for a second.
 
If she will be using it as her main system for 4 years, then I think that spending the extra cash for a MacBook Pro would be best.


And yes, go with M$ Office- the compatibility is needed (at least it is at my college).
 
i am just heading to grad school and i use my lappy for everything, and i just recieved my MBP and i think that it would work for her. btw at Purdue Univ, our student cost for MS office is only 13$. so the prices arent that bad..

Only $13 for M$ Office?! :eek: I thought that I got a good deal by only spending $90 for it at my school. :eek: :)
