So this is my current situation. I have a verizon IP4 that is jailbroken and has a decent amount of cydia tweaks done to it. I have a 4S that I bought and had to activate because verizon said I hadn't activated it and they were going to charge me. So I did then promptly reactivated my iphone 4. My reason for not activating is waiting for a untethered jailbreak

So this started problem 1. My friends that have ios5 would text me and it would automatically go to imessage (so I haven't been getting them and they sometimes go to my 4S if I turn it on and have wifi on). I still haven't been able to fix this, though I just learned of this today and learned that I should try activating the 4s again, disabling imessage then reactivating my 4. Thoughts on this?

So now i'm contemplating doing ios5 on my iphone4. If i did this, could I just update it in itunes or do I have to backup the phone first then restore the phone, then update, then restore from backup then do the 'tethered' jailbreak?

Ive never updated my phone after I jailbroke it, and i'm assuming that there is no way to automatically have all your customization back after the update and rejailbreak.

Does the semi-tether jailbreak work on the 4S? and if you do restart the phone, then boot it back up in redsnow do you loose your tweaks or is everything fine and back to the way you had it (winterboard) and all

Just contemplating a lot

If the 4S has WiFi then can't you just turn off iMessage in settings?
I have heard there is a package backup utility in Cydia for restoring your settings. I have no personal experience with that. A tethered jailbreak isn't that bad if you are careful to never let your battery run dead. All your settings will still be there, you just need a computer to start the phone back up. The semi-tethered jailbreak may help with starting it without a computer, but I don't know much about that.
There is no jailbreak for the 4S.
