Why did Apple go this route? This sticks out as totally alien to the rest of iOS17. I miss the old skeuomorphism…but really?

I'm guessing that they did this because it's a big change to a part of the phone that hasn't really evolved since it was introduced in 2006. While nerds and tech enthusiasts might be fine figuring it out, a lot of Apple's userbase are regular people who don't pay attention to these small details. By showing where the button is on the phone, it helps educate users about the change.

I don't think this interface is going to stick around for more than a couple of years.

It's a brand new feature and they want to highlight the possibilities in a flashy way. If they just tucked it way in the settings, people might not even think about it's other uses.

This is not the skeuomorphism that iOS 6.x users know... This just shows the side of the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max with the functionality icon on top of the Action button...

I could be wrong since I have not seen an iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max in person although it could be just a graphic/render of an iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max and not an actual unit pictured...

This is skeuomorphism taken to the next level.
