iPod Skiing with iPod?

Well, its ski season again! :D This year, I hope to bring the iPod along and have some music while flying down the slopes. I know that whenever I'm up in the mountains, my cell phone battery and camera battery both last a maximum of 2 minutes in use. I dont know if its the cold air or the altitude or what.

Anyway, will the iPod act similarly? With all the battery problems associated with iPods, do you guys think this will mess up the battery at all, maybe causing it to not hold a good charge anymore?

iPod is a 4G 20GB that is slightly used with exception battery life as of now. Any comments or suggestions? Thanks... :cool:
 
I know but what will this do to the battery life is my question. If its just going to use the battery more quickly, then I will still use it. However, if its going to cause the battery to start holding a crappy charge, then I wont use it. :rolleyes:
 
Keep the iPod warm inside the second layer of clothing and you shouldn't have any problems with battery life. I'd be more concerned with moisture. I take my shuffle.

Shuffle is your friend. My 3G's battery is stuffed from my winter in Canada going from -30 to 20 to -30 to 20 everytime I went in and out of the buildings.

It's the cold that does it, the battery relies on a chemical reaction proceeds to completion quicker at colder temperatures, it's a reversible reaction that produces heat as it produces power thus, sucking all the heat out of it will make the reaction go faster and the power will be produced over a much shorter period of time. They are also prone to more water damage from sweat, falling and possible moisture condensation on the inside.

Take a shuffle and have some fun, tunes whilst skiing is great but be sure to have the sound at a volume so that you can still hear people yelling "look out" from behind you. Otherwise all hell could break loose.
 
Hard disk heads literally "fly" above the disk platters on a thin cushion of air. See http://computer.howstuffworks.com/question60.htm

When the air gets too thin, the heads don't "fly" anymore and bad things happen.

That's at around 10,000ft in altitude. Best not to take your iPod to the Everest Base Camp and be sure to turn it off before summitting any of the 14ers.

Update: Been using it for the past few days up here at around 12,000ft. I've never seen so many people using iPods. Works flawlessly at high altitudes....so far.:eek:

people, it's like Chundles says!!

quite often, when you crash and you hade music on, the insurence company will not pay!!
happend to a friend of mine... another one got banned from a slope in switzerland because he brought his iPod, they didn't let him ride the lift!!

If they banned everyone who brought music players here, there MIGHT be 6 people left on the mountain....maybe. ;)

Yeah same here. Those little white headphones are everywhere!

My brother takes his iPod with him snowboarding, works great. I treat mine like a child and I'm afraid that I'll drop it in the snow whilst skiing (I do lots of downhill, and I go so fast that I'd be pretty far away before I could stop and pick it up if it fell out of my pocket). I'm just gonna buy a shuffle to take with me this season, only the price of two lift-tickets, it won't skip, and it can go around my neck.
