You guys really pay for Mobile Me?

I use Gmail for free! with built in video chat for email and Fox Marks to sync my book marks on Firefox and Sky Drive! all for free! life is sweet! :D

Yes I really do!

And it works much better than trying to make several different web apps work together. And if the comments on that blog post tell me anything, it's that the MobileMe experience is much better...
 
there is no such thing as 'free' on the internet. SOMEBODY pays.
In case of MobMe it is me who pays. In case of Gmail and Yahoo and Hotmail, you pay by being bombarded with advertisements (just think what that does to your mind and spirit). In addition, with Yahoo and Google it is very clear who pays op top of that: human rights activists in China.
It is a bloody shame everybody is so happy about 'free email' and happily support a company that has such dodgy policies in China and is so unclear about storage of our personal details (like Gmail).

Does MobMe suck? Yes. But at least it's fair.

Have you actually used Gmail...?
 
yes I have checked it out. I didn't like the threading.
But that's not the point. I won't use it.

We ('the free west') are happily supporting google/gmail who works WITH the Chinese Gov to filter out search results about 'freedom of speech' etc. Yahoo gave the details of a human rights activist to that same Gov.

HOW can you say: 'Gmail is great!' if you know people on the other side of the world are being killed for their opinion? Is this FREEdom? Are we in the west so corrupt that we care more about FREE email than about the policy of the company?

Don't you care Gmail has NO policy about how long they store your emails? Perhaps in 50 years time they will be used against you in court when the US will be run by a fascist government. Have you even considered that? It's only 20 years ago East-Germany was a fascist state that spied on it's own civilians. (Don't get me started on G.W. Bush and his phone taps).

Please help me understand...

(PS: I am aware this forum is probably not the best place to discuss these matters, and I apologize. I just couldn't take it any more to read yet another 'Gmail=great' post)
 
I used Gmail (with a personal domain) and never see any advertisements. I use mail.app. Also, I don't see the "threaded" view of messages that Google forces in the web gui because of mail.app (no, I don't like the threaded view - it would be nice if it had an option that could be disabled and have the gui present a standard chronological view of messages).

But, I also subscribe to mobileme for the other services. I like that it's all-in-one. Most of the other types of free services can't compare with space offered, presentation, etc. For example, while Google's Picasa Web Albums, Flickr, etc are free, I much prefer MM's Gallery gui. Dropbox (a good network disk storage) is free for only 2 GB.

There seem to be some limits to skydrive's 25GB limit (such as a 50MB per file max. for uploads). That may not affect most files, but someone wants to push an archive (.dmg for example), it may not work. And, sine it's from MS, how "Mac-compatible" is it? I haven't found a way to create a secure webdav connection like I can with idisk. Sometimes it seems MS goes out of it's way to make things not work with Mac (I'm thinking of how Entourage 2008 is sooo lacking in features that Outlook has had for 8 years when used with Exchange).

And, should they ever turn it on, the idisk feature for "mailing large files" is going to be pretty cool with the options available for it (x-number of downloads before the link expires, password proction option, etc). The public folder in idisk is not at all the same.

Bottom line, I prefer MM's all-in-one Mac-friendly design over dealing with vendors for each piece that all have different user names and password requirements to remember.
