... just had it in my app updates - wonder if it's got push notifications enabled!

Fab

Edit: Still no push - what are they doing!!!

I hope they do something like Sling does and try to release a NON-US version w/ 3G....or I hope the FCC gets involved!

can skype work on a non jailbroken touch2g? obv. assuming there is an attached mic.

If you want to use Skype over 3G, just jailbreak. I know a lot of people don't want to jailbreak for whatever reason, but it really does open up a whole new world for your phone. I'm not into theming or anything like that, but the iphone is capable of so much more once you jailbreak. If you're sick of playing by Apple and AT&T's ridiculous rules, give it a shot. It's so easy to jb and if you don't like it for whatever reason, you can just revert back to your pre-jb status. You don't lose anything by trying, right?

I have friends who bricked their iPhones by jailbreak and could never revert back ever again.

So no thanks.

I'm not sure what you friends did and what they tried to do to repair the phone, but I certainly wouldn't let that prevent me from trying it. If you read up on jailbreaking, you'll find that it's virtually impossible to brick your phone. The jb software has been out for quite a while now and it's much better than it was in the past. You'd have to screw things up really bad to brick your phone and even then, it's almost always recoverable.

It makes no difference to me if people want to jb or not though. I'm just trying to help people who are complaining about not being able to use Skype over 3G. The capability is there - you just have to be willing to put in the 10-15 minutes it takes to jb your phone. If you're not willing to do that for fear of bricking your phone, that's certainly your prerogative.

Jailbreak sucks

- Crashes & instability
- Malfunctioning & safety
- Invasion of privacy
- Exposing children to age-inappropriate content
- Viruses & malware
- Inability to update software
- Cellular network impact
- Piracy of developers' applications
- Instability of developers' applications
- Increased support burden
- Developer relationships
- The Apple/iPhone brand
- Limitation on ability to innovate

Wow - I'm not even going to bother addressing those one by one. Some of them just make no sense whatsoever and are flat-out ridiculous and wrong. You obviously have something against the jailbreaking community and I have no idea what it is. I just hope other people take the time to read up on the pros and cons before making their decisions. You clearly have made your mind up already.

Apple made it clear right here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3743

If you damage your iPhone, Apple won’t fix it. Some of my friends have damaged their jailed iPhones and gotten full replacements! This is not a possibility for someone with a jailbroken iPhone. Apple will just say, “The reason it’s not working is because you hacked it.” Hacking your iPhone is not sanctioned by Apple, so whatever you do is at your own risk.

A majority of the iPhone apps on installer are absolute pointless. Also, people make a lot of apps just to prove the point that it is possible, but actually do nothing helpful for the user. I have two examples. I downloaded this one apps called cowbell… You tap on it and it makes a cowbell noise, this is self explanatory. There is also an app that lets your record videos, but only 5 seconds long. Then, the only way to get it onto your computer it to SSH into your iPhone. Trust me there are a lot more apps that do nothing helpful than apps that cool or help you get things done.

You love your iPhone and it already does everything you want it to. You just have to live for 4 months, knowing it can do so much more. It’s a great iPod, a great phone and a great internet communicator. Why should you jeopardize that?

The app store has this as well. Fart apps. There are loads that do nothing other than the point you have made, on the actual app store

There are also apps that allow the iPhone and iPhone 3G to record proper videos, any length. There are also apps that enable MMS on the iPhone 2G (and these MMS apps were around before apple even got them to the market). There are also many tethering apps, apps that all background processes, apps that allow you to customise just about everything. All things users have requested that are slowly being implemented, all of which have been available to the jailbreaking community for months (And sometimes years). You have to be an idiot to damage an iPhone by jailbreaking it, and many of those points you raised earlier are total lies.

You love your iPhone and it already does everything you want it to.
No it doesn't

Why should you jeopardize that?
Jeopardise what? If you're worried about bricking the iPhone, don't be. You have to be an idiot to do so, as people have already said. If something goes wrong, restore the iPhone in iTunes and apple won't know you ever jailbroke. Done

LOL! "Apple said it" - it must definitely be so. Look, if you and your "friends" are so technically clueless that you think an iPhone can be bricked by a software jailbreak, then by all means keep your iPhones jailed.

But I don't think you need to be enlightening anyone here about the dangers of jailbreaking since you clearly have no idea of what you're speaking. Besides, this is the thread about Skype 1.2, so let's get back on topic shall we?

Though totally off-topic, I will make an attempt to put some of these false accusations right:

- Crashes & instability
- Malfunction & Safety

Simply not the case if you don't trash your phone with lots of crap like themes and lots of background applications. So it's up to the user how they treat their iPhone once it's been JBed. JBing on its own certainly does NOT cause crashes and instability.

- Invasion of privacy

Funny you would say that, especially since Apple allows third party applications to track and store user information without them knowing about this. JBing actually gives you the opportunity to opt-out of this facility if you're really concerned about this.

- Exposing children to age-inappropriate content

Remind me, why does a child need an iPhone?

- Viruses & malware

iPhone OS is based on Mac OS X, which is VERY safe. I'd therefore hazard a guess that the iPhone OS is also very resilient to viruses and malware.

- Inability to update software

Wrong. You can ALWAYS update the software as soon as new software is released. You will lose your jailbreak, but it will not have any other impacts. The dev team is also very quick to release updated versions of pwnage tool/redsn0w, so if you want to keep the JB you can wait for this.

- Cellular network impact

What? Like being able to use skype over 3G? Give us a break.

- Piracy of developers' applications

It's up to the user if they want to make use of this or not. The dev team actually discourages the use of pirated applications strongly.

- Instability of developers' applications

JBing actually gives developers a lot more resources for debugging their applications. I'd therefore say that in some cases applications distributed through cydia and icy are more stable.

- Increased support burden

What's the first thing the apple customer support hotline will tell you when you have an issue with your jailed iphone? That's right, they'll say: "Have you tried restoring it". So you'll have to restore it anyways if you have issues. So I don't see how there is a bigger burden to get support.

- Developer relationships

What?

- The Apple/iPhone brand

Get over it.

- Limitation on ability to innovate

I would argue exactly the opposite. Apple is restricting the iPhone's potential severely. Jailbreaking gives developers the opportunity to innovate more and make much better use of the iPhones potential.

Fabian

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3GS (White, 32GB): Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

@fabian9: those are all great points you made. It amazes me to see how fervently some people oppose jailbreaking and how much inaccurate information about it is thrown about. :(

Anyway, I really wish the Skype folks would enable Bluetooth for the app - that's the only real problem I have with it (I use 3G Unrestrictor so I don't suffer from the wifi limitation) ...
