I live in Thailand and need a US Phone number and the ability to do two way SMS. Until its recently announced demise, Skype worked fairly well for this. (Why do I need a US number? Because my US banks and credit card companies require one.)

As Skype is going away I need an alternative.

I'd prefer a one-app solution that doesn't require a soft phone. voip.ms and other VOIP only services need a soft phone to work. Unfortunately, the soft phone apps I've looked at seem to all have terrible reviews in the iPhone App Store. However, there are many out there and I may have missed a gem.

Zoom Phone seems OK, but charges $10 a month if you port your existing Skype number. $20 if you get a new number along with the ported number.

Google Voice wouldn't let me port the Skype number and refused to give me a US number, probably because it detected I was using a VPN.

All suggestions welcome.
