Does anybody know how or when I can get Skype on my iPhone? I know that fring makes a Skype client for the jailbroken iPhone, but it doesn't seem like they have a legal one in the App Store. Skype themselves have a version for WinMobile and Nokia Internet tablets, but nothing for the iPhone. I found trufone in the App Store, but I don't think it's a Skype client.

Anybody know anything about this situation?

Thanks.

Last time I checked, Apple will only be allowing VOIP apps connectivity over wireless access points, but not the cellular network. I would assume this has made coding such apps more complicated, and possibly put them under deeper apple scrutiny before release. I'm sure a skype app will appear in decent time.

I've been using Skype forever now and they have nothing for the iPhone yet :(

I was praying there would be something in the appstore, but no luck. They have it for Nokia and Win mobile, so the iPhone should be coming soon (I hope).

Forget Fring, your not missing anything as far as VOiP goes... call quality and stability are horrible. Another alternative is the web based IM+ http://www.shapeservices.com/en/products/details.php?product=skype&platform=iphone. It's ok... works well sometimes and others not so good.

The biggest problem I've found with these skype clients is the way they connect to skype. If you use the desktop client on your Mac it goes Desktop<->Skype

If you use a third party offering, they all seem to go
iPhone<->3rd party server<->Skype. The bottleneck is the 3rd party server.

The app store did only go live today, there are bound to be even more application in the works, clearly only a handful of developer have managed to get their applications ready for today, and almost all the application released today still need plenty of work.

I downloaded fring for my Nokia E61, and it does seem rather clunky. I had trouble figuring out the application.

I hope something comes soon, because at&t's international roaming rates are murder and it isn't convenient to bring a MacBook Pro everywhere just to make calls.
