I'm in Canada and Skype is not available in our app store. I worked around that and managed to install it on my phone.

Not to sure how it works though....Is calling over wifi absolutely free or am I going to get charged one way or another??

Thanks

i suggest reading how skype works. but for what you need to know. If you call computer/iphone to computer it is free. However, if you call someone's cell phone or land line then it costs money.

i did read up on it a little (maybe not enough) but was a little confused. So who charges me then?? My service provider?

None of the apps in the app store can access your AT&T account without you putting your information in. You have to buy skype credit to call a land line or cell phone. I am pretty sure even if you try to call someone's phone, without skype credit, the call won't go through.

this page shows you what you will get charged for....http://www.skype.com/prices/

Just to clear things up a little......I am talking about calling over WIFI. I'm in Canada so no AT&T. On wifi i can call no problem.

You can only make calls over wifi. If you're calling a number rather than an available skype contact who is also running the client, then you will be charged. You cannot place either type of call over a cell network.

Thanks.

I must be slow but I'm still confused.

If I am connected to WIFI and I dial a number (not a contact) through the skype app. am I getting charged??? If so by who since I have not bought any credits.

You won't get charged for dialling the number but as you've not bought any credit, the call won't go through. If you've no credit, you can only place skype calls to skype contacts, who will need to be online (showing green in Contacts tab).

I'm in Canada, so I can tell you these things with certainty

Skype is free on wi-fi for skype to skype calling.

You can go to skype and pay 2.95 a month to get unlimited outbound skype to telephone across north America (I use this option to make outbound calls during the day ad not use daytime minutes)

These only work on Wi-Fi on a stock phone , jailbreak offers other solutions.

All calls that I am Dialing are making it through.?????

if you dial a number you will get charged by skype. in order for the call to go through, you must have skype credits, which you buy before hand - like a pay as you go service

skype to skype calls, to other people who use skype, are free

however, both types of calls require a wifi connection

get it?

If you Jailbreak, then you can trick your iPhone into thinking its on WiFi all the time hence calling over your cell providers network.
you can also install Backgrounder, and have Skype running in the background to revieve calls (over the cell network) while you not in the app.

Voipover3G is the name of the app that makes iPhone think its on wifi when its not. Its a little tricky to setup, but I think iClarified has a guide.

Thanks to everyone.

I get what you are all telling me but like I said I'm dialing out no problem and I have not bought any credits whatsoever. Who knows maybe there is an introductory offer going on.

Yes, but are you actually speaking with someone? If so, then as you say, maybe you've snagged an intro offer. You can check by going to your accounts page at skype.com

It must of been an intro offer because it stopped working a couple hours after my original post.

thanks

Yes, it will have been the free money they give you. When I created my skype account I was given £1.00 Credit, however this didn't notice this as the Skype App on iPod Touch only displays this on the "My Info" Section.
