I just tried to make a Skype call over 3G and was unable to do so (getting a message saying that I am offline). I rebooted my phone twice, removed and re-added Skype to my 3G Unrestrictor list, etc. - still no joy. Unfortunately, I don't have access to wifi right now so I can't test that functionality but I have been able to make calls over 3G in the past. Anyone else having a problem right now?

Forget it. It was actually telling me that my Skype status was offline, not my phone. Why does that happen though? I keep my status at Invisible and don't ever change it. Why would it change to Offline without me doing anything? Is there a way to prevent that from happening?

Umm... I've never been able to make Skype calls over 3G, from version 1.0 up. It even implies that on their website:

Free Skype-to-Skype calls from any WiFi zone.

In short, you'll need WiFi to make a Skype call.

You're completely wrong about that. 3g Unrestrictor allows you to use Skype, Slingplayer, etc. over 3g.

You need to be jailbroken.

Its a Cydia store app.

And where in your post do you say that you are jailbroken? Next time, provide more information and you'll get the right answer. My post still stands: Natively, Skype does not support Skype calls over 3G.

Like others have said, this is the Hacks forum and I did mention 3G Unrestrictor, so that should tell you that my phone is jailbroken. You gave bad information - just deal with it. It's not the end of the world.

Did I?

Skype doesn't natively support calls over 3G. That's the App's word, not mine.

It's neither here nor there anymore; we're both right.. oh well..

Yeah, you did. You made an uninformed post and then (unsuccessfully) tried to cover your ass by throwing the word "native" in your followup, a word that's conspicuously absent from your first post.

Seeing as how we're in the iPhone Hacks forum, we're working under the assumption that users are going beyond native functions.

No, I didn't. The OP asked why he couldn't make Skype calls over 3G. Skype doesn't support calls over 3G without some hack. Black/White, plain and simple. In essence, I just posted what everybody ALREADY KNOWS.

Like I said, it's neither here nor there. The OP and I already settled this, but if you want to, keep posting. I won't be here to listen.

Yeah this happens to me with the most recent version of skype as well. I've always had it set to auto log-on when I open my iPhone app, but about 50% of the time, it defaults to offline and I need to go change it manually.

Let me save you guys some time...

Yes you did.
No I didn't
Yes you did
No I didn't
Yes you...

Blah blah.

Facts are here:
  • Unjailbroken users are stuck with Wifi Only
  • 3G Unrestrictor works with Skype to make calls over Edge/3G available only in Cydia Store.
