Skype is proprietary. I don't think it will be released as a plugin for iChat.

I think it's possible... Skype is basically Jabber, and I believe there's an official API for it, so someone could write a plugin. There's Skype for Adium, anyways.

I've got a thread going here with a little info on iChat plugins, trying to find out everything we can: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1182387/

Skype is NOT basically jabber. It's an entirely proprietary, encrypted protocol.

With Service Plugins, I suppose it is possible for Skype (Microsoft) to create a skype plugin, but I doubt they will. Anything else that supports skype does it by reverse engineering the protocol (I believe someone recently figured out the crypto.)

True, I was mistaken and it's not Jabber. I know there's a few Jabber transports for it, so I mistook it for being based upon Jabber in some way.

And of course Microsoft won't be making an iChat plugin, but it doesn't matter as long as third party developers are interested to make one themselves. If Apple was only interested in official implementation of service protocols, they wouldn't have offered a plugin feature, they would have just worked directly with the other companies like they did with AIM or Google Talk. So I'd say they're counting on indie developers to make the plugins themselves.

While Skype does in fact use a closed, encrypted protocol, it doesn't mean you can't write an iChat plugin for it. Skype has an API that you can hook into. There are many chat programs on iOS, Windows and Mac OS X that already do this. At least text chatting is possible.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

There is a bridge plug-in for Adium, but it needs Skype running.
