Well, this brand new 2.3 G5 is tons of fun so far...
Day 1: Tried using the power button to put the computer to sleep. The computer simply crashed and froze. Chalked it up to a stupid quirk, since I never use the power button for sleep anyway.

Sleep has worked since then by simply choosing it from the Apple menu or by letting it go to sleep on its own.

Somewhere in this timeframe, updated to 10.4.1.

3 days ago: Called AppleCare to complain about goofy superdrive. They had me reset the PRAM, which of course, did nothing (except mess up some settings). They're sending me a new superdrive. Anyway, I'm pretty sure I had put the computer to sleep since then.

2 days ago, I tried the power button sleep thing again, because sometimes I just need to know.... and it worked. Without hesitation, it went into sleep mode. I made sure everything had pulsing lights.

Still waiting for superdrive...

Now, the computer does 1 of a few things:
- immediately wakes up after putting to sleep
- monitor goes dark, but not off, and the computer is then unresponsive - needs reboot.
- on the occasion that it will sleep, it won't wake properly, going to the same state as ther aforementioned problem (dark monitor, unresponsive machine).
- once, the display went to sleep (light was pulsing), but the computer went into unresponsive mode.
- Computer will sometimes restart without doing the usual restart chime.

WTF? Under 30 days old and already problems are mounting. Stranegly, there seem to be a lot of reports with sleep problems, but I wasn't having these problems until 2 days ago.

Any ideas? I think buying AppleCare is what jinxed me. I've never bought AppleCare and I've never had ANY problems....

*sigh*

the monitor going dark and then going unresponsive and then needing a reboot has happened to me about three times. no one on here has figured out what the hell that problem arises from. and yes my ibook has restarted without the chime before as well and of course ONLY SINCE 10.4.1

it hasnt happened in about 5 days so im hoping its little temper tantrum is over

good luck with the applecare, i bought it and still havent used it

Well, it's frustrating, but I'm not angry about it.... yet.
Having AppleCare means I can call them every day for the next 3 years - and I will do just that, if necessary. lol

Admittedly, I'm happy others are ahving the same problems. It most likely means that my machine isn't faulty (other than the sueprdirve). However, I must have done a hard restart with the power button like 100 times.
I'm still calling them. I think it should be reported.
I appreciate the responses.
