Sleep/power button issue, need opinions.

Somehow or the other the sleep/power button is now almost flush with the case. This happened yesterday. The button still works, you just have to more or less hit it dead center for it to work. The phone does have a scuff near the button but that is from when it sild across the garage floor last year.

Here are my options for resolving the problem:

1. Take apart the phone and see if I can fix it thus voiding warranty.
2. Call apple and setup an appt to see what they can do but I am out of warranty. Would do this before option #1. Phone not in perfect condition so they may tell me to take a hike, see first paragraph.
3. Go buy 3GS, but do not qualify for upgrade until December 2009 according to ATT so it would cost more than I think it should.
4. Suck it up and deal with it.

Phone is a 3G 16GB.

Taking apart the iPhone is a pretty bad idea. Chances are, unless if you've done it before, you're just gonna break the iPhone and have nothing left.

If the iPhone's power button was damaged when it was slid across the floor of the garage, then Apple won't replace/fix it for you. If not, then you should be fine.

It's up to you if you want to upgrade or not. My advice is, if you need an upgrade, get it. If you're satisfied with what you have now, stick with it and wait. It's a pretty expensive upgrade, so make sure it's worth what you're paying.

See if you can get the power button fixed through Apple. If you can't, and the power button is not that much of a bother to you, I would just suck it up.

Update.

Went to the Apple store tonight, showed them the problem, the first guy said that it was normal and sent me on my way. I then checked out the phones on the sales floor and they were not at all as bad as mine, went back to counter to make my purchase, mentioned that the phones on the floor are not like mine, another manager looked at it (mentioned he had seen this before), offered to swap it out and now I have a brand new phone. Persistence pays off.

And what bothered me the most was the drawer of at least 30 swappable 3G's sitting there to take care of customers. I guess the first guy did not want to take the time.
