Sleep Problem with 1.83Ghz MBP

I have a MBP that has problems sleeping. When you put it to sleep it may or may not go to sleep. Sometimes it goes into sleep mode when you shut it down. Does anyone know where the sleep sensors are (if any). I'm thinking if I replace the display and/or the top case it would solve the problem?

Any thoughts or ideas?
