My earlier thread on this issue: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/mbp-13-2017-restarts-while-in-sleep-mode.2172405/#post-27186644

MacBook Pro 13" 2017
Sierra 10.12.6

This time I got complete error message. It happens a couple of times a week. Started happening a month ago I think. I never shut down the MBP, always close the lid when I am done for the day and it goes to sleep and then I open the lid next day and I start where I left off. But when this Sleep Wake failure happens, I see the login screen when I open the lid and when I log in, all apps restart, background wallpaper changes to the default one and I see this error report.

It wasn't letting me post the report here because of the 70000 characters limit. Here's the pastebin link of the report: https://pastebin.com/iQxFVEAf

Did you get anywhere with this? I have done several things to remedy this problem and no luck.

I've had the same problem with my wife's 2013 Macbook Air after I replaced her SSHD and then had to upgrade to Catalina OS.

I got some technical advise from the company I bought the SSHD from that has fixed this sleep/failure. I'll just copy and paste what they emailed me. Hopefully this helps:

"We are actively investigating this issue and the exact circumstances under which it can be reliably reproduced; it seems likely at this time the cause is not specific to OWC hardware. Once we are able to verify the issue, we will work with our technology partners to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we recommend deactivating the default Standby mode as a means of circumventing the crash behavior. This is a work around while we work with Apple to resolve this issue.

  1. Open the Terminal app
  2. Type the following: sudo pmset -a standby 0
  3. Press Return
  4. Quit the Terminal
This prevents the computer from entering Standby mode while the computer is in normal Sleep mode. From this point, allowing the computer to return to sleep and then waking the computer, should prevent the kernel panic from occurring. Initial findings suggest this will not significantly impact battery power or related issues. The system should behave as it normally does. If you need to confirm that the above setting was properly set, have the customer open their System Report, select the 'Power' option, and then check the 'Standby Enabled' value. It should say 0."
