Okay so long story short I have an OS X Mavericks backup from long ago, and it got slightly corrupted, so now when you open the disk that the backups are on it shows Backups.backupdb and a folder called lost+found. This contains all of the files which were moved some how. I found the applications folder and need to put it back (I want to repair this Mavericks backup and got back to Mavericks) but OS X won't let me move the files. Is there a tool that I can use to move them back, or a way of doing this without problems? I am running OS X El Capitan, hence why this thread is here.

UPDATE: I've looked on Apple's website and it says to Option click the Time Machine icon and click on Verify Backups, which I tried but the button is greyed out.

UPDATE (again): My backup disk is a USB local disk, not a network disk.

If your Mac is shipped with Mavericks, you may use internet recovery to download Mavericks and install.

But talking about repairing damaged backup, one way is to manually restore the data you want in finder.

I tried moving the stuff, but it told me that "Backup items can't be modified". How do I launch this internet recovery? Trying to hold down Cmd + R when booting? I've tried that but it takes me to OS X utilities, and from there I can only install El Capitan beta.

But yes it was shipped with Mavericks.

I don't remember clearly but it seems that hotkey is cmd+option+r. From that you will go to Internet recovery.

What I say is not modifying files inside, but copy data stored inside to your system.
