I am getting ready to purchase a Macbook Pro tomorrow! I want to install Windows Xp on it for gaming. My question is regarding slipstreaming. My Windows XP disc does not have SP2 with it. Can I use another Intel Mac with XP on it via bootcamp to slipstream SP2 onto a bootable XP disc?

Thanks. How would nLite help? It appears to be for the specific purpose of not installing certain components of Windows during a system install.

Many pre-SP2 CDs (particularly SP1a OEM CDs) also include certain slipstreamed hotfixes, and the usual method doesn't work for them, but nLite apparently handles them too.

Gotcha. I am new to the idea of slipstreaming in any form. Ah the simple joys of OS X.

The short answer to your original question is yes...with provisions. You need a burning client that can create bootable disks. Without that you are pretty much SOL.

Here are a couple guides:

http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/winxp-sp2-bootcd.html
http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm

Basicly what you are going to do is:

1. Copy all the files from your CD down to a dir on your hard drive.
2. Download SP2 from MS HERE
3. dump the XP2 files into the dir you downloaded to.
4. Run the XP2 installer with a switch. Its in the guide above.
5. Using an app like ISO buster extract the boot "image" from your original CD into a dir on your computer.
6. Using a burning util like Nero Burning ROM or Easy CD creator create a boot CD with the "image" you extracted, and burn the original upgraded files back onto a CD and you should be done.

Its not as complex as it sounds. Just follow the guide that I linked to above.

PS- Make sure you turn off the option in windows to hide hidden files, along with hide OS files before copying the files from the CD down.

hey balamw,
I just tried using nLite, and it wouldb't open. is there any software similar to this?
thanks

I posted a suggestion to the other thread. I'm not that familiar with nlite myself, but was suggesting it since it seems to work well for others...

you might want to go here
It has a load of information on slipstreaming, and a selection of tools to do it, I have slipstreammed in all my third party drivers, ms office and all the other programs I install as essentials onto one DVD

nLite is fantastic. I used it to make an XP disc that not only had SP2 slipstreamed in, but also every update from SP2 until now (which is a LOT -- at least an hour's worth of downloading and installing from Windows update). Since I do a lot of XP installs, it saves a lot of time.
