Has anyone seen this??

[link removed]

Its shocking how sloppy the workmanship is that goes into this MacBook Pro.
Whats really shocking is that the forum has recieved a threatening letter from Apple's legal staff, requesting a link to this image be removed because "The Service Source manual for the MacBook Pro is Apple's intellectual property and is protected by U.S. copyright law."

I dont have a MacBook Pro, but it makes me wonder!

It's OK to discuss the contents that you've seen, but it's not advisable to link to an image which Apple legal has indicated involves a violation of copyright.

I believe whistle blower laws do take precedence over supposed copyright violation. What does the picture show exactly?

You can believe that, and you can be wrong.

"Whistleblower" laws protect employees from retribution when they bring unsafe working conditions or violations of the law to the attention of their employer or applicable enforcement agencies.

They most certainly do not give a person carte blanche to go around posting internal documents due to the perception of a manufacturing flaw. (Though it's doubtful anyone would take action if the flaw being exposed via internal documents would protect the physical safety of consumers. And no, "it's too warm for my lap!" doesn't count.)

I believe the OP posted a link to the Apple service manual for the MBP. More likely than not, the same service manual that's been on Something Awful and a hundred other sites over the past couple of weeks.

This is just thermal grease that helps to cool the processing chips. Am I missing something?

Normally your not suppose to put a large amount of thermal goop down.

I personally don't see any sloppy workmanship, my last pc laptop had the same amount of paste and I had to correct it...maybe apple will go back to using that foam tape stuff or have the machines apply a lesser amount.

Too MUCH THERMAL GREASE

The pic was of the Actual Thermal grease on the Heatsinks.
In the Manual they have an exorbant amount of it in the picuture... showing where to Apply the Thermal grease.

The Problem is that SOME MACBOOKS are comming off the production line with TOO MUCH thermal grease and as a result the Heat is being dissapated everywhere into the machine instead of just INTO THE HEATSINK.
THats why when you clean off the old stuff and put on your own in a more moderate fasion... the Heat gets Dissapated off the Processor into the Heatsink Directly, which then gets cooled off by the Fans the way it should.

I was playing with a friends Macbook yesterday and it was FINE!!! THis is an "issue" but not on every Macbook!

*****WHEW****** :D Please dont sue me Apple

Ditto. People are making such a big deal out of nothing. Apple is under a freakin microscope and this is the best that people can find? The MBP is an INCREDIBLE laptop and that is that.

Awfully defensive aren't we! ;)

Anyway, yeah, some macbook pros have more issues than others. Mine gets very hot, but I can handle it. I don't really have a whine or anything. Also, too much thermal grease has the opposite effect, there really shouldn't be more than a drop or two, and what I've seen from the pics, it looks like a tablespoon worth per chip.

People just love to jump all over the MBP for some reason. The MBP does get pretty darn hot but so was my Tibook 1ghz so I don't get what people are complaining about. I'm waiting to hear more about people "reapplying" the grease in the correct areas to see if that has any effect at all. I'm betting it won't but that's JMO.

What can I say I'm a mac fanboy and darn proud of it:D

according to posts at www.xlr8yourmac.com re-applying the thermal grease has had some very noticeable effects. I think a person even used a thermometer and his temp dropped like 10 degrees. They have a whole page devoted to this. Mine gets very hot, probably the hottest laptop I've had, but it's alright with me, it works very nicely otherwise. The MBP has it's share of issues, but I'd say mine has been pretty perfect overall. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones.
