also, is nobody annoyed they kept the latch close mechanism, rather than moving to magnets like the MB?

Yes, it has been like that for the previous models.

that's because the palm area of the 17inch is wide enough to accomodate a cd drive and so it can be located to the top.

but for the 15 inch... if the cd drive were to be located on the top... it will get in the way of the keyboard since the palm area of the 15 inch is smaller...

that's why

ahh i get it :p but why would you want it higher up? why not jus put both lower for design consistancy..

to note your second question i am not annoyed about the latch - i like of like it more than the magnet. the latch is classier. :)

More than likely, it was higher in the Rev A MBP17 to accommodate the double-layer DVD±RW, which did not fit in the Rev A MBP15. Changing the case and the tooling required to make it, solely for aesthetics, when it would probably require some internal changes, as well, seems like it would be a waste of money.

As for the physical latch -- I've never really put a MB maglatch to the test, but I assume that the MPB latch does a better job of ensuring that the lid stays closed.

17" MBP innards are going to be different different to the 15's - it has that extra USB for starters, plus it's a larger enclosure so they probably got to play around with the architecture a little
