Hi!

I have a new iPhone 12 Mini, latest iOS and all. I've put it on an AC charger for the night (Apple A1400, 5W), the same way I did for the past week, and it chimed and showed the "charging" status.

Then, this morning, it was on 25% charge. As it turns out, despite registering the charger, it didn't take any power, in fact the discharge rate seems to be unaffected:

(The cable is fine. I had a dodgy 6 year old iPhone SE with contact issues, and no matter how bad the contact was, once connected and having a charging status, some Joules always trickled in. Here: none.)

All physical contacts seem to be fine. It's like a software bug. Any ideas?

I'd say its a bug. Try turning off optimised charging and see if it charges.

Try rebooting the phone (power off/on) - I have had a few instances where my 2020 SE would not charge wirelessly until I rebooted it (and as soon as I rebooted the phone it was perfectly fine again).

I know you're not doing wireless charge, but could be some similar sort of problem.

test it again. May have been a non repeatable fluke.
Make sure the plug is fully inserted straight and no debris is in the port

It's not debris. As I said: a 6 year old, wonky SE with contact problems will always charge once the status is "charging".

Here the status was charging all night, but it didn't take any power.

Not true. There can be a momentary connection at first insertion, enough to register as a charge, but the connection can be so poor that only a minuscule amount of current is going into the battery which is less than the battery is discharging — so overnight the net result is still a discharge.

This may not be your phone’s issue but it is a possibility.

Happened again, so the latest iOS update didn't fix it.

I only restarted the phone once since I got it, for the OS update.

It’s a good practice reboot phone at least once a week.

This is what my battery discharge does over night. I set up a Shortcut to automatically put it into Low Power Mode after I go to bed. Helps a little bit.
