Slow Ethernet but fast Wifi

Hi,

There is my setup: a 2011 mac mini, 4th gen airport extreme and a WDTV Live. (and few windows laptops)

Before I had a MBP, a windows PC, file transfer were allright. For some reason, I cant get decent speed when transferring files on my network if my mac mini is involved when using an ethernet cable. Speeds are fast when using WiFi. I changed the cable and bought a good Cat 6 cable and no results. I cleaned install OSX 10,7 and still, not better.

Why would the file transfer when using the Ethernet port would be slow (4h for a 1gig file) and normal or fast when using Wifi. Oh and by the way, my WDTV is wired so is my windows tower. File transfer between them is real good.

What kind of router do you have?

Sounds like a duplex / speed mismatch on the Ethernet port. What are you plugging the mini into?

Go to your "network" System Preferences and then select the "Hardware" tab for your ethernet connection. This will tell you what speed you're hooking up at.

That should give you a clue as to your problem.

I ran into the same issue when I bought my G5's last year before my mini. Everything in my home office was routed through a CISCO 10/100 switch, which of course nerffed the 100/1000 on the G5. That in turn made my ethernet connection from the G5 to the switch to my modem HORRID.
It all has to do with the through put with each type of connection. Wireless N will kick the pants out of a 10/100 connection any day. Upgrading to a wireless N router, binning the switch and a nice N card for my G5 has fixed things up nicely at a vary nominal cost. (Though the G5's are gone now ).
