All of a sudden I am getting the rainbow circle spinning around when I open certain applications. My iMac is 2 years old and I had upgraded to 16 gb RAM from 8 when I purchased it then. Is it the new OS versions starting to slow it down. Would upgrading to 32gb of RAM help. Or other suggestions.

More RAM isn't going to help the issue unless you've somehow maxed out usage on 16GB. The only thing for HS that will help loading times of applications is a different hard drive - either fusion or SSD - or I've had success uninstalling/reinstalling especially after an OS update.
More RAM will not help with this. Was it fine before, then with no changes made on your part, this just started out of the blue? If so, that sounds like a failing drive.
