Slow speeds on MBP?

My slowness is back

Here are different screenshots from activity moniter:







These were all takin within a minute or two. The computer was extremely slow, then sped up a little bit, but its going a little slow right now. I tried reseting safari already, and dragged the prefs file to the desktop.

Also, Safari is running EXTREMELY slow, and since that is universal, I wouldn't expect a problem with it. Almost everything on the computer is universal (there's not much.)

hmm and you've got a 1 GB of ram, it should be very smooth...

Well, I'll say it before someone else does (cuz someone will)... try repairing permissions!

Have you tried a fresh install (without migrating any settings)? There may be something weird going on there.

Before reinstalling the OS, open up a new user account and see if the problems carry over.

try those other options first, but I just did a fresh install (migrated alot over) and every since it has been way WAY faster

Permissions are repaired, but it's still going slow. Now to the user account, which I tried once before after your advice madjew, I don't remember if it made a difference, but I'll try again.

Also, whenever I'm loading a page, or opening a folder or program, and basically doing everything, there is a sound coming from the computer, it seems to be coming from the left side.



NEW USER ACCOUNT:

When it first logged in, I heard that sound and it was going extremely slow. Here is a screenshot of activity monitor while a page was loading in Safari, and then a screenshot of what it is currently doing.





With only Safari and Activity monitor running, on the new account iWeb took 6 bounces to load. Garage band in two, and iTunes in one. There is a difference in speed, but not an extremely large difference.

Okay, well pretty much the only software-side check we've got left is the hard drive. Verify the disk in Disk Utility (not the permissions, but the disk) and see what it comes back with.

What sort of sound are you hearing?

How does XP run? Slow too? (that is if you have it loaded on it) 'Cause if it does maybe it's a hardware problem.

I'm doing the Verify Disk now.

XP runs fast. I've been using Pro Tools in that, until it comes out in Universal Binary, hopefully it will in a few weeks.

I'm not sure what this slowness is you speak of in your activity monitor. Is it because it's not using 100% CPU all the time? Also, application load times (dock bounces) are very hard drive dependent. I guess I'm just would like you to clarify your definition of slowness.

Try calling Apple tech support (1-800-APL-CARE). I had a slow MBP, and tey walked me through some steps (the only one I remember is repairing permissions) that fixed it.

I was just showing things in the activity moniter to give more information about what's going on in the computer. I don't want it to use 100% CPU all the time, and it doesn't do that anyway. Things are a little laggy, everything takes a while to load, even just a folder.

I was trying to avoid a reinstall.

Will a reinstall affect boot camp and my winxp installation at all?

Good question. I imagine a full reformat and install will get rid of the Windows partition but an Archive & Install probably won't. Alternatively, you could just try reinstalling the 10.4.6 Combo Update. This shouldn't have any effect on Bootcamp.

I'd try the 10.4.6 update first because it's easier.

Have you by any chance File Sharing running?

If that is the case I strongly suggest you do the following:

Go to System Prefrences --> Internet & Network --> Sharing --> Services; uncheck Windows Sharing.

File sharing wasn't running. I ended up backing up my files, and doing a clean install of Tiger. Thanks for the help everyone!
