slow startup...MBC2d

my core 2 duo MB takes a fair while to start up- about 1 minute which in my terms is really slow
I have 1 Gb of RAM and 120GB HD with 86BG free space
and wherever i start programs in the Dock like Firefox or itunes , it seems to bounce for ages once it start?
you reckon its a problem or am i just being pedantic??

I get this problem a lot if I try to start them to early after a restart or a shutdown. If I don't wait until everything is done loading and what not.... sucks because actually my programs don't open they just bounce and bounce and boucne and bounce. then they stop and just have a little triangle under them...

What do you have listed in your Login Items in System Preferences and also in your StartupItems folder in the Library? After restarting, if it stays sluggish for a little while then open up Activity Monitor, view All Processes and see if there's anything taking up an extraordinary amount of resources.

Applications...Utilities....Activity Monitor. It's a good idea to have it in your dock and have it startup at login, it lets me have a quick view of where all of my memory is going. You can change the icon in the dock to match system memory, disk activity, disk usuage, and network status. Just right click(or control click) the activity monitor icon and go to "dock icon" and then you can change what it shows.

If this is from a cold boot, yes, you probably are. Initial startup after a cold boot is slow because everything is being swapped from the hard disk into memory.

Also, I noticed my startup times becoming more short with the passage of time, Tiger has some startup optimization features that take a few boots to implement.

Ok here is the confusion I have... I have 2 GB's of RAM and I have activity monitor running, mail, and firefox running. Dashboard is up but only has 5 widgets up and I also have a yahoo calendar widget up...

How with only that am I using 1.75 gb's of RAM

That is active RAM right? That is unusual. It should show a list of active programs running and the Real Memory and Virtual Memory that each app is using. Have the filter set to "All Processes" this way you will see everything. Sort the list by Real Memory and see which apps are the memory hogs. Are you running any non-Universal binary apps? Rosetta is a big memory hog. You can tell by the "KIND" list on the far right, it will either say Intel or PowerPC. Post back with a list of what is taking up the most memory. Hope this helps.

I was just going by Used and Free. but I'm supposed to go by active and inactive?

Yup, I had this exact same issue, like 30 seconds before the apple logo would appear at startup. Go into the startup disk and make sure OS X is selected.

BTW, that's a hilarious typo

Hey Poppe,

Yeah it seems like you have a lot of memory usage for what you have open. You should count inactive memory as free memory so I wouldn't worry too much about free memory still your active memory should be less. Again, if you have any apps open that aren't universal binary rosetta will suck up a lot of memory. As far as the slow boot time, you might want to try to repair permissions from disk utility. See if that might help a bit, other than that I can't be too much more help. Hope you get it all working.

RAM isn't the problem. You're not even using half of it.

Have you checked the Startup and Login Items? Have you verified the drive as mentioned by the wise and ancient MaaseyRacer? Do this through Disk utility.

How do I find the Start up Items again?

Also in the Startup Disk I clicked the Mac OS X yada yada yada but it doesn't ever seem to really be clicked. It shows it's highlighted and what not but is there someway to make it seem more permanent?
