I'm sharing folders from my 2006 mac mini (OSX Tiger) on the wifi network. I can log in to it from my 2012 macbook pro (latest OS) using AFP share and FTP bit not SMB, even though I use the exact same username & password. The transfer speed is extremely slow - about 1.5MB/second. Any ideas ?

Presuming neither is connected to ethernet (they really should be) - the mac mini only has 802.11g wifi. You're not far from the typical usable throughput.

WiFi, particularly 2.4Ghz is prone to all kinds of interference and contention from neighboring WiFi. It results in a lot of re-transmitted packets, so it is common to experience very slow transfer speeds. If you do a lot of file transferring, better off using wired networks.

If you are dead set on keeping everything wireless, you'll need to get some usb adapters that are capable of faster transfer speeds. You'll also need to upgrade your router if it isn't capable of AC (much faster than G). Then you'll be limited by the speed of the drive in the Mac Mini. You could probably get a faster HDD, replacing it with a more expensive SSD would be best but very costly.

Or, you could connect everything by ethernet. Cheaper, faster but uglier solution.

on the land line mr. smith.
Besides what was mentioned...the signal strength can be a factor too. Even with new(er) access points and destination wifi devices, a very weak signal will degrade throughput.

So you need a good wifi network, with strong, consistent signal strength at all clients doing the data transfers....as well as possibly new(er) client wifi adapters described above.
