Hi everyone

Recently I transferred a few files, from my iMac to a USB stick. It took forever using a USB hub, so I thought that'd be the problem (disclaimer: I am not particularly tech savy, though I would not consider myself an illiterate). When I decided to try it again (the transfer didn't complete, another reason not to trust the hub), I tried plugging it into the computer.

It gave me an estimate of 5' for an 8 GB file.

Much to my surprise, I transferred that same file, from the USB stick to my 2012 MacBook Air, and I had it transferred in about a minute, minute and a half.

By my reckoning, there's no way in hell a 2012 laptop should be faster, in any shape or form, than a 2020 desktop computer, so what do you guys think might be the problem?

Many thanks.

USB sticks have fast reads and slow writes. No surprises here.

Use a benchmark like AmorphousDiskMark or ATTO Disk Benchmark or AJA System Test Lite or Blackmagic Disk Speed Test.
