Hi all

I had a DLink DIR-655 Wireless N router and my wireless was running very fast, 9.7MB using www.speedtest.net, with no lag looking up sites. I had to upgrade the router since I was hosting a site and the router wasn't working properly for that.

So, I bought a Linksys WRT610N Dual Band router. I have the iMac running on the 5GHz band and it runs around the same speed.

HOWEVER, when I open Safari or Firefox, in the status bar, it says "looking up google.ca..." or whatever site I'm browsing for and can take up to 5-10 seconds before it starts to display the site. When it is on the site, browsing around is fast as long as it doesn't change domains.

ANOTHER HITCH, I have VMWare's Fusion installed on the iMac and Vista installed there and there is no lag to browsing a site. When I type in the site, it immediately goes to the site and I am able to browse fine.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

This sounds much more like a DNS issue. Have you tried setting the DNS entries in the router to your ISPs DNS servers? I don't have this router yet, but I remember there being a similar type of issue with Adium/MSH when it was getting the DNS entries from the router (192.168.1.1 type of entry).

incompatibility problems with mac mini MA206LL/A* and linksys WRT610N

i also have been having the same lag with this particular router.

i purchased a new wrt610n and one of the machines that is connected is a mac mini, 1.66 ghz intel core duo.
#ma2066/ll/a for those who want to compare notes. the computer is stock with the 802.11g wireless card that came with the machine. it is running the current software and all the updates are up to date.

i am using wpa 2 personal w / aes

their is some kind of incompatibility or issue between the wrt610n and the mac mini.

either using the wireless connection OR connected directly to the router, web pages are very slow to load. sometimes it can take up to 45 seconds for the mac mini to open up a webpage. for 45 seconds it is at 'contacting website'

when i try to run software update, i get a time out error -1001, make sure you can connect to the internet and try again.

hulu desktop is also running slow.

copying a file from the mac mini to a another computer over wifi averages about 1 mb/s

when i informed linksys about this problem, they took my phone number and said that a linksys Technician / senior tech support employee would call me back. that was a day or so ago. i asked if i can have any newer firmware, considering the latest is 5 months old.

i am considering returning this router, but i don't see a lot of good alternatives that have similar features. i have 21 days to return this. the restocking fee will be 15% i am also considering various 802.11n solutions for the mac mini, even including the dell 1500 wireless mini card, i heard it works as an airport card.

if i do get a different model router i would like external antennas.

my previous router was a 5 year old wrt54gs version 2.0, and it never had a problem with any of the computers with the network.

the trouble shooting steps involved changing the beacon to 75 and the mtu to something else, i forgot. it did not make a difference.

i moved the mini and connected it wired to the wrt610 and turned off the airport wireless card and there was no improvement.

when i disconnected the wrt610n and connected the mac mini directly to my dsl modem. the issues were suddenly gone.

theres some kind of problem with this particular unit. and i would like to hear from others who have solved this or are experiencing the same problem

i am also using the same dns numbers on my 7 year old wrt54gs v2 router.
today i even tried turning off the airport card and using an old cameo ethernet to wifi bridge. the ethernet to wifi bridge worked a little better, but its still lagging a little bit. i was able after many tries to download from apple update using the cameo bridge.

after reconfiguring it, and connecting it directly to my dsl modem, i think i proved that my mini is fine. i think the wrt610n has defective firmware that does not like mac computers and should be avoided.

I am having the SAME problem except on my MACBOOK PRO Santa Rosa.

I just bought eh WRT610N and my Windows 7 computer runs the internet REALLY fast. www.speedtest.net indicated a 6mb/s download speed so i know the internet is not the problem.

When i am connected through wireless on my MACBOOK PRO i open the network utility application and there are errors being parsed through in the Send and Recieve section. (I am connected on "N" thru either 2.4ghz or 5ghz same problem)

I then tried connecting through the ETHERNET cord from my router and same problem, pages are hanging and loading slow taking up to 15 seconds to load GOOGLE.COM <=-----RIDICULOUS:mad::mad::mad:

I thought my internet card on the laptop was damaged but then i connected from my modem straight to my macbook pro through the ethernet cord and BOOM the internet was SUPER fast.

WRT610N = CRAP

This is good to know. I was looking at upgrading from a WRT54-G over the next couple of weeks. If the time capsule has its issues fixed with Xbox live, I may just go that route.

Well it turns out I bought one of these anyway. WRT610N. I figured, why not I can return it within 14 days.

So far it works perfectly, have not seen any of the issues noted in this thread. The MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac, iPhones, Xbox 360 and PS3 all connect and run very snappy. (there is even a VOIP box in between the modem and the router)

Motorola 6120 docsis 3 +Netgear wrn 3700

I'm getting 50mbs downloads with this combo. :D:D:D:
