“SM_NVMeROM Media” as device label in Disk Utility for Apple NVMe SSD SSPolaris.

Hi all,

I got a bunch of used Apple OEM NVMe SSD SSPolaris from a cheap bulk buy, all of them in good working condition, except for one which seems to be non functional.

When using Disk Utility to format the disk it gets stuck at a certain stage of the process and it's impossible to make it usable. The device label as it's shown by Disk Utility is “SM_NVMeROM Media” (first image), which is rather different to the other fully functional devices (second image). In those cases the label is “APPLE SSD SM1024L Media”.

Any ideas on what might be going on with the disk would be very much appreciated.

Btw, I've just found a PDF document on Samsung SSD cryptographic module. There's a fragment that reads:

"If FW (firmware) integrity failure occurs during booting process of the module, it will be reported as a response via theidentify command.

-Serial Number : SM_ROM_DEFAULT_SN
-Model Number : SM_NVMeROM
-FW Version : PNXROM01

In this case, there is no way to recover the module. Module shall be sent back to Samsung for RMA."

(I guess here RMA stands for "Return Merchandise Authorization").
